Mission Statement
The mission of the Plattsburgh State Art Museum is to collect, study, preserve, exhibit, and interpret original works of art; to advance the academic goals of the college; and to contribute to the campus climate of the college and the cultural education of the northern New York and southeastern Canadian region.
A year-round schedule of changing exhibitions is offered to the college and the public, presenting a variety of contemporary artists, collections, traveling exhibitions, and faculty and student artwork.
Venues include the Rockwell Kent Gallery located in the Feinberg Library, and the Burke Gallery and the Myers Lobby Gallery located in the Myers Fine Arts building.
Building on the philosopher André Malraux’s concept of the musée imaginaire, the art installation program titled “Museum Without Walls” forms an aesthetic network across campus that helps students by fostering creativity, critical thinking, emotional intelligence and cultural understanding. Carefully curated artworks serve as primary tools for exploring complex ideas.
Additionally, the museum is the repository of the most complete collection in the country of the works of Rockwell Kent and is the home of the Rockwell Kent Gallery and Collection. There is currently a selection of artwork on display in the gallery. Researchers may contact the Plattsburgh State Art Museum to make an appointment to view art pieces not on display.
The museum sponsors a variety of programs, both public and academic, as well as publications, membership and our museum shop. The museum facilitates the graduating B.A. candidates’ “Senior Exhibition,” and offers internships in research and collections management.
