Internship & Career Opportunities

We are continuously cultivating new opportunities and strongly encourage you to participate in the internship program. Internships will enhance your leadership development, team building skills, and give you hands-on learning opportunities while pursuing your undergraduate accounting education at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program

Accounting students at SUNY Plattsburgh are offering free tax preparation as part of a collaborative effort between the college and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The program, best known as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), offers free tax help to low-to moderate-income ($36,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Our student volunteers receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in the surrounding community. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Plattsburgh students who are not claimed as dependents and who earn $36,000 or below can also take advantage of this free tax preparation.

To qualify to volunteer for the program, SUNY Plattsburgh students must have completed the Income Tax I (ACC 403) course and must have either completed or be currently enrolled in Income Tax II (ACC 404). In addition, student volunteers must receive VITA training in tax law and electronic filing.

For further information, please contact the Internships and Career Opportunities Office in the School of Business and Economics. If you would like to know more about the VITA program, please visit the IRS VITA Grant Program website.

Networking Opportunities with Successful Alumni

Our graduates have gone off to exciting careers in big accounting firms like KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), corporations like IBM and JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Ben & Jerry’s. They work on Wall Street in firms like Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs and in nonprofit and government agencies like the IRS and the FBI. We also have alumni in national, regional and local accounting firms such as BDO USA and Martindale Keysor & Co.
