Martial Arts Instructional and Competitive Sports Club

About the Martial Arts Sports Club and operating guidelines

 Participants practice Brazilian Sport Jiu-Jitsu, basic through advanced levels. Practice sessions will be working on ring strategies, basic kicking and punching techniques. Guard and mounting transitions and entering skills will also be covered. The use of basic equipment, focus mitts and Thai pads will be taught. Extra conditioning drills that compliment other sports will also be included.

Instruction is planned so that individuals may start at anytime during the school year. One tournament will be scheduled each semester. Tournament participants will be selected by the coach based on attendance and skill level to represent the club for each tournament.

The Instructor/coach, David Boise, is a master instructor who has been training for the last 35 years. He is a 1st degree black belt in Chinese Kempo, has a 8th degree Black Belt and is regional instructor of Fred Villari's Studio (Shaolin Kempo, Jiu-Jitsu and Kung Fu). He has been teaching professionally for 30 years. Funded by Student Association.

Rules and Guidelines

Membership

Must be a full-time SUNY Plattsburgh student and each member must have a signed SUNY Plattsburgh Sports Club Personal Information Form & SUNY Plattsburgh Participation Agreement/Liability Waiver Form on file to participate. (If under 18 years of age, liability form must be signed by parent.) Each member is responsible to carry personal health insurance. All members are expected to follow regulations stated in SUNY Plattsburgh Club Program Manual.

PLEASE NOTE: All participants must complete participant information and waiver forms which may be downloaded here. These forms cannot be submitted online but must be completed, printed out, signed, and then submitted to team leaders before one can participate in the program.

Plattsburgh State Jiu-Jitsu Club attended the Fall 2013 tournament in Winooski, Vt.

Season and Practices

The club will be scheduled for the fall and spring semester. No practices or tournaments will be scheduled during college breaks or finals week. Instruction/practices are scheduled in Memorial Hall on the bottom level in the group activity room every Monday and Wednesday from 8:00-9:30 p.m. 

Uniforms

No uniforms are required. Participants should wear loose comfortable clothing. Street shoes are not allowed in activity area. If a uniform is required to compete in a tournament, the cost is the responsibility of the student.

Safety

The instructor/coach will be responsible for the general safety of all club members during practices and competitions and have valid CPR/First Aid certification. The instructor/coach is responsible for attending injured participant consistent with CPR/FA standards until trained medical personnel have arrived.

Travel

Travel arrangements are usually by private cars. The college is not responsible for any damages or injuries related to travel. It is strongly recommended that drivers of personal cars obtain additional insurance. Club members wishing to transport other club members must receive approval prior to traveling. To become an authorized driver, a copy of their driver’s license and the SUNY Plattsburgh Private Vehicle Use form must be submitted to the RSD.   Tournaments: Competition must be within 300 mile radius of Plattsburgh

Finances

Student Association monies may be used for instructor/coach contract, individual entry fees (no more than 6 participants per tournament and mileage (up to maximum of 300 miles one way) @ .25 per mile.

Instructor/Coach Responsibilities

Coach/instructor will:

  1. Be required along with student leaders to meet for orientation with RSD at the beginning of each semester.
  2. Receive a Sports Club Manual, Club & Organization Resource Manual and a copy of their club’s operating guidelines at the start of each school year.
  3. Ensure all required forms are submitted in order for a student to participate or drive for the club.
  4. Ensure the SA's Club/Organization Semester Registration and Directory forms must be submitted to the RSD each semester.
  5. Select two students to serve as student leaders.
  6. Only allow students to participate if on approved roster and have submitted appropriate forms to RSC.
  7. Will not allow an injured member to participate without a release from qualified medical personnel.
  8. Work with RSD to develop budget

Team Leaders will:

  1. Ensure that all players are SUNY Plattsburgh students (by checking on student locator) and carrying 12 credits.
  2. Ensure that the club and its members are aware of and follow all the operating guidelines by the College’s Recreational Sports program and the Student Association regarding clubs.
  3. Attend or designate attendees at any mandatory meetings set forth by the Recreational Sports or the Student Association.
  4. Update approved player roster and submit to RSD on weekly basis. (Deleting names of those no longer participating or adding new members and after submitting appropriate forms).
  5. Will ensure all members are following Student Association rules and regulations and Recreational Sports operating guidelines.

Club Treasurer will:

  1. Submit any requests for monies two weeks prior to event if monies will be needed. (reimbursement for travel or entry fee).
  2. On the Monday following an event, submit names and addresses for drivers mileage reimbursement and member entry fee form for reimbursement. (Drivers can be submitted by e-mail). Entry fee form signed by meet management must be submitted for reimbursement.
