Pre-Freshman Summer Institute

Students admitted to SUNY College at Plattsburgh as EOP freshmen must successfully complete the Pre-Freshman Summer Institute before matriculating (beginning their college education) in the fall.  Students who do not complete the Summer Institute will have their acceptances to Plattsburgh withdrawn, and the students will be unable to enroll in classes.  Students must obtain a minimum summer grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or above AND refrain from violating the Summer Institute Policies as well as the Student Code of Conduct.  Students may not arrive to Summer Institute late or depart early.

The EOP Summer Institute is an opportunity to further develop skills, character and discipline needed for college success. Students are engaged in a rigorous four-week academic program while living on campus. The Summer Institute is a great adventure and strong start to the college experience.

Academic Expectations

Class Attendance

During Summer Institute, participants will build skills and confidence by completing coursework in:

• Mathematics
• College Writing & Advanced Grammar
• Special Topics (e.g. Coaching Psychology, Contemporary Issues in College Life, Technology in Academia)

Tutorial Services

Individual and group tutoring is available in all subjects. Tutoring hours are completed after required classes and in the late afternoon/evening in our residence hall and computer lab. All program participants are required to engage in tutoring as it is an essential component of academic success. Summer tutoring will familiarize participants with similar services offered during the academic year in the EOP office and the Claude J. Clark Learning Center.

Counseling/Advising Services

All Summer Institute participants will be assigned to an EOP counselor who will continue to serve as a resource during the academic year. EOP counselors assist students with a variety of issues and concerns, and will meet with all Institute participants at least once during the summer.

Recreational and Social Activities

Opportunities to participate in a variety of social and recreational activities are provided throughout the summer. These activities are designed to:

• foster personal growth;
• provide an opportunity for fun and enjoyment;
• and expose participants to the community and region they will live in as college students.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to participate in Summer Institute?

All new freshmen are required to complete Summer Institute and pass all summer coursework before beginning classes in the fall. Students who do not complete Summer Institute will be withdrawn from the college and removed from fall courses.

Can I arrive late or leave Summer Institute early?

No. Participants must be present on scheduled check-in and check-out days to insure that required placement exams and post-tests are complete. Students who arrive after the scheduled check-in date will be sent home.

Can I work during Summer Institute?

Your daily schedule (see sample above) is packed, and required trips are scheduled on weekends...you will not have time to work.

Can I go home on weekends if I live close to campus?

Students may not leave campus for the duration of Summer Institute unless there is an emergency. Guests may not visit campus without notifying the EOP office in advance.

How much does Summer Institute cost?

All program expenses are paid including your housing, food, and recreational trips. Students are encouraged to bring money only for snacks, souvenirs, etc.

What is the housing like?

Participants will live in a residence hall on campus. All participants will have a roommate.

How do people contact me while I'm in Plattsburgh?

You may bring a cell phone, but it is not required. Each room will have a telephone for local calls and long-distance calls made via phone card. You may also receive mail/packages.

Should I bring a laptop or computer?

Desktop computers are not permitted, and laptops are discouraged. Access to computer labs is available throughout the summer.

What should I bring?

Participants will receive a full list of recommended items such as types of appropriate clothing, approved appliances, etc.

How do I do laundry?

The residence hall is equipped with laundry facilities that are pre-paid.  You do not need to bring quarters!

How far away is Plattsburgh?

For many of our participants, Plattsburgh is quite far from home. Students from the city can expect to be approximately 5-7 hours from home. Students from the Albany area are 2-4 hours from home. Local students might be 10 minutes to an hour from home. Many students find that they don't have time to be homesick, but those who are receive a lot of care and support throughout the summer.
