The second annual SUNY Plattsburgh Dr. Richard Semmler ’68 Alumni Service Day will take place Saturday, April 20, 2013, at nonprofit sites in New York City, Vermont and Virginia.
The event has been named in honor of Distinguished Service Award recipient Dr. Richard Semmler ’68, who has received national recognition for his philanthropy and community service in national publications like the Washington Post and the Huffington Post.
The Semmler Service Day, which takes place each spring, invites alumni to take part in projects in various cities throughout the United States, offering them an opportunity to follow in Semmler’s footsteps and give back to their communities through volunteer work.
For all events, wear comfortable clothes and sensible shoes, and bring water and snacks. Lunch will be provided. Be sure to plan travel in advance, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area.
RSVP by April 15, 2013, to firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling
Volunteers will be stationed at outdoor market tables, weighing and distributing fresh produce — including bananas, onions, cabbages and potatoes — to eligible market-goers. Alumni should check the MTA website for any transportation service changes or delays the day of the event.
Volunteer duties include planting; weeding; mulch spreading; general cleanup; painting; distributing posters and flyers for upcoming park events; or staffing a table collecting donations for City Harvest food drive.
Volunteers will spread mulch around trees near the office and gardens at the homestead, rake the driveway to remove weeds, fill in holes with gravel, and pick up trash and debris along the trails.
A barbeque will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the pavilion.
Volunteers will help remove debris from the yard and remove an existing fence to install a new one. Event is hosted by Jessica Donah '06 (email@example.com) and Dr. Richard Semmler '68 (firstname.lastname@example.org) .
