International Admissions Staff - Darlene Pickman

Assistant to the Director

Darlene_internet.JPGI am the first person that you will meet when coming into the office. Besides the day-to-day phones and paperwork, I am there to help, assist and guide the internationals students. If there is a problem with health insurance, I am the one the students will come to. I am affectionately known as the "Mom" of the office.

Working with International Students is a wonderful experience. From the inquiries by email to finally meeting them in person. I have a great respect for both the students and their families: making the journey to study abroad, leaving family and friends behind. The students have also taught me the importance of "Family".

Personal Biography: I am originally from Boonville, New York a small town in western New York. My family moved to the North Country when I was very young. I have moved out of the area a few times, but have always come back. I now reside in Morrisonville, New York with my two kids, Sabrina and Phillip.

Places I have visited: I have not really done much traveling. I have vacationed with my family on the east coast in Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina and Florida. We have visited Montreal and various small towns throughout Quebec. Even with just the small amount of traveling that we have done, there is much to see and experience. Everyone of any culture can have fun at the amusement parks. The biggest problem that I have encountered would be communication. But you do manage to work through that problem.

Favorite SUNY Plattsburgh: I really do not have one favorite activity on campus, but if I have to pick one, I would choose International Student Orientation. Finally meeting the student and sometimes their families that you have been in contact with. Many students arrive exhausted from hours of travel, are homesick and afraid, but behind it all, you can see the excitement that their dream is finally starting to come true. My favorite activities off campus would be camping, fishing, hiking, reading and doing jigsaw puzzles. Camping, fishing and hiking in the Adirondack Mountains are a beautiful, relaxing and exciting experience, from the magnificent views atop a mountain, the peacefulness of the forest and the excitement of catching a fish. Curling up and reading a good book and sitting and doing a 2000 piece puzzle with my kids on a rainy or snowy day.

Favorite experience as an ISS staff member: My most memorable experience is my first International Student Orientation. There was only the Assistant Director, Bethany, and myself. I had only been with the office about 4 months and we had to bring in the new fall class. There was much excitement, as it was my first time meeting students that I have been communicating with. I had not realized that there was so much to do in getting ready and after arrival. But we did it. Not only did we bring in the fall class, but worked well together as a team and as friends.

Best advice for prospective international students: The advice that I would give is: "Do not be afraid to ask questions! Become involved and make friends."
