Why Middlebury in Chile?

Middlebury College has an outstanding reputation and longstanding tradition in foreign language education and study abroad. Their programs in Chile are designed for students who are mature, independent, already highly proficient in the Spanish language and who wish to be become fully bilingual through a true immersion experience. You have the option of enrolling in nine different Chilean universities where you will be taking normal university courses alongside native students. You may find a list of the nine universities on Middlebury's website.

• Terms: fall or spring semesters (exact dates depend on university chosen).
• Eligibility: SUNY Plattsburgh student; five semesters of Spanish (including one content course); be enrolled in a Spanish course the semester before departure; junior standing and 3.0 GPA.
• Credits: 12-18 undergraduate per semester approximately.
• Application deadlines: March 1 for fall and September 15 for spring.

How to Apply

You must submit both the SUNY Application and a Middlebury College application.  First submit the SUNY application to Study Abroad and Exchanges by the deadlines stated in the above section.  Once we review your completed SUNY application, we will send you a link to complete the Middlebury application online.

Courses in Chile

Please visit Middlebury's website for links to the universities to which you may apply and course information. Unfortunately, the host institutions post limited information about their courses online. You may wish to contact Middlebury to see if they might have print materials to send to you.

Accommodations

The housing coordinator will assign you a "Chilean family" where you will live. Students will have a private room and share meals with the host family. What constitutes the family ranges from single mothers with children at home to couples whose children have grown and left home (but who tend to visit on weekends). Some families live in houses and others in apartments, and the proximity of the hosts to your chosen university and/or internship will be a factor in your placement.
