Student Application Process

Please collect all your student exchange application forms and send them to our office along with any other required documentation outlined on the form (official transcript, etc.). Study Abroad and Exchanges must receive all application materials by April 15 for the fall semester (August-December) and October 1 for the spring semester (January-May).

Academic Calendar

There are important semester dates that may affect exchange students. Current and upcoming semester dates are always available online by accessing the academic calendar.

Courses

Course descriptions are available online. They will help you and your exchange students select appropriate courses at SUNY Plattsburgh. Please be advised that some courses are offered only in the spring or fall semester and that many courses require that students have taken certain prerequisite courses before enrolling. Relevant semester and prerequisite information can be found within each course description.

Accommodation

Exchange students have the option to live on or off-campus. Information about on-campus residence halls can be found through Residential Life. Students must make independent arrangements to live off-campus. Please contact Study Abroad and Exchanges for more information.

Meals

There are a wide variety of dining options at SUNY Plattsburgh which include dining halls, cafes and take-out. All on-campus students are required to purchase one of the anytime meal plans. Off-campus students may purchase any of the meal plans if they wish.

Immigration

In order to be an exchange student in the United States, every international student must apply for a J-1 visa. After the SUNY Plattsburgh incoming exchange application has been approved, Study Abroad and Exchanges will mail form DS-2019. The student must take this form to a U.S. consulate to apply for J-1 status. They will have to assemble other documents to support their application, such as proof of sufficient funds to support themselves while in the United States. Please remind students that they will likely need to make an appointment to visit the consulate and that the documents they are required to submit may vary from one consulate to the next. Additional information can be found on the Department of State website for J-1 visas. Canadian Citizens: Exchange students with Canadian citizenship do not need to apply for a J-1 visa at a U.S. consulate. They may apply for J-1 status by using same day processing at the border. Students should bring the DS-2019 form from SUNY Plattsburgh, their Canadian passport, the admissions letter from SUNY Plattsburgh, and proof of sufficient funds to support themselves while in the United States.

Orientation

All new exchange students must attend a mandatory orientation. Orientation is an important part of the arrival process because it provides crucial information about academics, immigration regulations, and culture. In addition, it offers opportunities for students to meet new people and acclimate to their new university. Study Abroad and Exchanges partners with International Student Services for orientation events.

Transcript

All exchange students must complete the transcript request form before departing Plattsburgh. Study Abroad and Exchanges is not able to send any grade information until the form is submitted.
