- About Plattsburgh
Congratulations! You have successfully submitted your application to study abroad. Waiting to hear about your placement can be exciting and difficult all at the same time. Many of our students say this process reminds them of what it was like applying to colleges when they were in high school. It may be helpful for you to understand what happens behind the scenes while you wait.
Application deadlines vary, and that means the date you will hear about your placement will vary, too. The SUNY system application that you completed allows you to apply to multiple programs at SUNY Plattsburgh as well as at other SUNY schools using one form. Each SUNY school’s study abroad and exchanges office will contact you with a decision about their programs.
You can typically expect a letter or e-mail with a placement decision within two weeks of the application deadline for the program you applied to. Note that if you submit your materials early this does not mean that you will get a decision any earlier.
It is very possible that you will be offered placement to more than one study abroad program. Your acceptance offer letter will include a deadline for receiving your acceptance along with a significant financial deposit (usually $250 - $500) that guarantees your spot in the program you choose. You should only accept and deposit for the one program that you intend to pursue. It is very important that you reply back to each school who offers you a placement, even if you decide to decline their offer.
One of the first things you will notice about the study abroad acceptance package you receive is the thickness of the envelope. There are many forms that you will need to complete to ensure that you maintain good health while you are abroad, keep adequate health insurance that covers you while you travel and while you are in your host country, and know what you need for documentation before you travel. Be prepared for a lot of paperwork, and call to schedule a physical with your home doctor as soon as you get the packet.
Please read and study your acceptance packet, and let us know if you have questions about anything. Failure to carefully read the entire packet and return the completed documents by the deadlines indicated could lead to a cancellation of your enrollment in your study abroad program.
