- About Plattsburgh
The physical education program is an elective program that offers 8 week and weekend activity courses to promote wellness as a lifestyle. Activity courses allow you to experience a new activity that now or in the future could enhance your fitness, personal, and professional life. Opportunities are also available if you are skilled in a particular activity area for you to become a teaching assistant for credit.
If you are looking for employment during the school year or in the summer, you should check out the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course that includes certification for lifeguarding, first aid, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and waterfront guarding. The Water Safety Instructor course certifies you to teach swimming to youth groups and adults. Both these courses have a prerequisite skill test.
Many majors and agencies are now requiring CPR and first aid certifications. An American Red Cross CPR/First Aid course is offered each quarter throughout the year. Nursing and communication disorder students are required to have this certification before starting their clinical experience and fitness centers require all employees to be certified. This courses instructs a layperson how to respond to and care for a victim for the first 10 minutes of an emergency.
Theory courses in wellness/fitness, coaching and exercise programs are available for students interested in the areas of coaching and personal fitness.
