Internationally acclaimed tenor Rockwell Blake leads a nine-day intensive masterclass program that promises to bring a unique vocal experience to its participants. The design of the program provides advanced singers and aspiring young professionals the opportunity to work with Blake on vocal technique, style and skills of the classical singing actor, in an extended and concentrated environment. Comprised of daily masterclass sessions, all under the instruction of American tenor Rockwell Blake, the program offers a distinctly focused immersion approach to singers of opera.
In order for singers to learn from Rockwell Blake and, through observation, from one another and in order to establish networks within the vocal pedagogy world, each singer’s session is open to all other singing participants, auditing participants and voice instructors of participating singers. On the final day of the program, all singing participants will perform in a culminating public concert. Such a concert will engage more people in the excitement and joy associated with opera singing and will promote the opera tradition with a wider audience.
All masterclass sessions and the final concert will be videotaped, so that participants will receive a daily archive of their progress and achievement, from beginning to end, over the immersion week. Dr. Karen Becker will accompany singers at each session and at the closing concert.
The First International Masterclass 2014 is sponsored by the Department of Music at SUNY Plattsburgh and coordinated by Associate Professor Jo Ellen Miano. All sessions will be directed by Rockwell Blake in SUNY Plattsburgh’s concert hall — the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium. The program begins on Saturday, August 9, and runs every day through Saturday, August 16, 2014. The culminating concert will be held on Saturday afternoon, August 16, at 7:30 p.m. in E Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. This concert is free and open to the public.
Jo Ellen Miano, coordinator for the masterclass program, is available to answer any logistical questions and will assist accepted participants with housing options during the masterclass period.
