Advisor to Do North: Touring the Adirondack Coast

James "Luke" Cyphers joined the Plattsburgh State faculty full-time in 2012 as an assistant professor, teaching magazine and sports journalism courses. He is the adviser to the student-produced print magazine, Do North: Touring the Adirondack Coast, which earned an All American rating from the Associated Collegiate Press for its debut issue in May of 2013. An adjunct lecturer at Plattsburgh from 2006 to 2012, Cyphers has reported and edited for a variety of publications during a 25-year journalism career, most recently at ESPN The Magazine. A graduate of the University of Colorado and Columbia University, he also has worked as a copy editor for Dow Jones & Co. and as a sports writer for the New York Daily News, where he covered high school championships, the NCAA Final Four, the U.S. Open (both tennis and golf), and the Super Bowl. He a founding member of the Daily News’ award-winning sports investigations team, and his work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, New York Newsday, The Village Voice, Adirondack Life magazine and SBNation.com. At ESPN, he reported and edited stories on topics ranging from Japanese baseball to the impact of Title IX on women coaches to doping in professional sports, and wrote dispatches from the 2006 and 2010 soccer World Cups and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
