Sara Wood, Class of 2004

Sara Wood majored in Cytotechnology and graduated December 2004. She works as a cytotechnologist at NorDx, a laboratory in Scarborough Maine.

My classes prepared me for Success in Cytology School

"I was impressed that the program was affiliated with one of the top Cytology schools in the country, Fletcher Allen Health Care School of Cytotechnology which was where I was able to go to receive my clinical training - I felt very prepared to enter my field in an entry level position after completing my training." "Well, everything I have accomplished I could not have done had I not attended Plattsburgh State, mainly due to the fact that I did not even know that my profession existed until Plattsburgh began offering it as a major of study. This being said, I have not been out of school that long to have made many accomplishments, yet, but I am rather proud of the fact that for the testing period for 2004, I attained the highest score in the country on the Board of Registry Exam I sat which gave me my qualifications as an ASCP cytotechnologist.

"My advisor, Dr Jose de Ondarza was very helpful in setting me on the right path for success. He ensured I had all my classes in order and applied in a timely manner to my cytology school so I was able to get a place since these programs accept very few students every year and acceptance is tough.

"The program is a very good program and the need for qualified cytotechnologist exceeds the number of us out there. Most of my classmates had a job lined up before we graduated and the other had jobs soon afterwards. The work is challenging but very rewarding. It a great feeling when you are studying a difficult case and you use your training and knowledge to arrive at the correct diagnosis."

Sara's Advice for Prospective Students

"Check into the Cytotechnology major, see what it is all about. It's a very interesting field and the need for qualified cytotechs and other medical technologists is great."
