How to configure your Android or IOS (iPad/iTouch/iPhone) Device

Email Setup Instructions for Android Devices

Server information:

Incoming Mail Server: mbx.plattsburgh.edu
            Protocol: SSL
            Port: 993 (should automatically set itself)
 
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.plattsburgh.edu
            Protocol: TLS (Accept All Certificates)
            Port: 587

Instructions:

  1. Go to Android Market/Play Store. Download and install K-9 Mail.
  2. Run K-9 Mail.
  3. Click Next to get past the intro screen.
  4. In the Set up a new account screen, enter the email address and password, and then Click "Manual Setup", which should be in the lower right corner.
  5. When you are asked what type of account you're setting up, select IMAP.
  6. Next you'll see Incoming Server Settings. Enter the server information displayed above for incoming mail server in the fields on the page.
  7. For Authentication type, leave it at "PLAIN".
  8. Leave the IMAP Path Prefix field blank as well.
  9. Use Compression on all networks.
  10. When you hit Next, it should verify your settings. If they're all OK, it'll take you to the Outgoing Server Settings screen.
  11. At Outgoing Server Settings, enter the settings listed above for Outgoing Mail Server.
  12. Check the box for "Require Sign In".
  13. Set Authentication type to "AUTOMATIC"
  14. Make sure username and password are in, and correct.
  15. Hit Next to confirm.
  16. Leave the rest of the settings at their defaults.
  17. Give the mail account a name, type the user's name, and hit Done.
  18. Test your work - send a test message to the device, reply to that message, then delete the message you received on the device. If all that is set, you're done!

Email Setup Instructions for iOS Devices

Server information:

Incoming Mail Server: mbx.plattsburgh.edu
            Protocol: SSL
            Port: 993 (should automatically set itself)
 
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.plattsburgh.edu
            Protocol: SSL
            Port: 587 (should automatically set itself)

  1. Go to Settings. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  2. Select "Add Account…" at the top
  3. Select "Other", at the bottom of the account type listing.
  4. Select "Add Mail Account" at the top of the screen.
  5. Fill out the New Account form with the following information: 
    --Name (the person's formal name, i.e. Firstname Lastname 
     --email address 
     --password (make sure you enter this correctly!) 
     --Description: PSU E-mail
  6. Hit the blue Next button in the upper right corner.
  7. Make sure IMAP is selected (blue) on the next screen
  8. Scroll down, and fill out the Incoming Mail Server section with the following information:
    --Host Name: mbx.plattsburgh.edu
    --User Name: person's campus username
    --Password: (this should be pre-populated, you don't have to touch this)
  9. Scroll down further, and fill out the Outgoing Mail Server section as follows:
    --Host Name: smtp.plattsburgh.edu
    --User Name: person's campus username
    --Password (type carefully!)
  10. Hit the blue Next button in the upper right corner. If you get a "Cannot Verify Server Identity" dialog, select "Continue". Note: You might get one for both incoming and outgoing servers.
  11. The Apple mobile device will attempt to verify the settings. This can take a while.
  12. On the IMAP screen showing Mail and Notes, hit the blue Save button in the upper right corner.
  13. You should now be back at the Mail, Contacts, Calendars settings pane. Select the PSU E-mail account.
  14. In the account summary window, where you are shown all the account settings, scroll to the bottom, and select Advanced.
  15. Verify that under "Incoming Settings", Use SSL is set to "ON", and the Server Port is 993. Make changes as necessary.
  16. Above the Incoming Settings section is the Mailbox Behaviors section. There, select "Deleted Mailbox".
  17. Even though it's already selected, select "Trash" under "On My iPad (or iPhone, or iPod, whichever you're setting up).
  18. Hit the gray Advanced arrow button in the upper left.
  19. Hit the gray Account arrow button in the upper left.
  20. Go the Outgoing Mail Server section, and select SMTP.
  21. In the SMTP window, the Primary Server section should list "smtp.plattsburgh.edu". Hit the little arrow next to the word "On".
  22. Make sure that "Use SSL" is set to ON, and the Server Port is set to 587. Make changes as necessary.
  23. Hit the blue Done button in the upper right corner.
  24. Hit the gray Account arrow button in the upper left corner.
  25. Hit the blue Done button in the upper right corner.
  26. Hit that same button again.
  27. Hit the Home button in the iOS device, then test your work - send a test message to the device, reply to that message, then delete the message you received. If all that is set, you're done!
