Fall 2014 Opening Week Information for New and Returning Students

Classes Begin:
Monday, August 25

Beginning Saturday, August 23


Residence halls open for new and returning students on Saturday, Aug. 23, and Sunday, Aug. 24, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. To check in, get your room combination and have your questions answered, report to the office of your assigned hall. If you do not know your assignment or if you plan to check in after Sunday, report to the Housing and Residence Life Office in Room 103 of Algonquin Hall.

No-shows forfeit their room reservation at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26. A listing of off-campus housing options is available online.

The office is open Saturday, Aug. 23, and Sunday, Aug. 24, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Admissions Office

The Admissions Office, located on the 10th floor of the Kehoe Administration Building, will be open Sunday, August 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

During these hours, newly admitted students to the Fall 2014 semester may stop in to discuss concerns related to their enrollment (e.g., transfer credit evaluations, change of major requests, college catalogs, etc.)

Placement Exams (Required Prior to Course Registration)

Saturday, August 23

  • 1 p.m. - Foreign Language Placement Exam - Yokum Hall
    • German: Yokum 203
    • French: Yokum C205
    • Spanish: Yokum CL 200
    • Italian: Yokum CL 208

      NOTES About Automatic Placement:
      1. Those who took two consecutive years, or fewer, of a foreign language in high school should take 111 level language (or take placement exam).
      2. Those with three consecutive years of foreign language in high school (within the last two years) or who achieved 85 or better on the NYS Regents Exam should take 150 or 112 level language (or take placement exam).
      3. Those with four consecutive years of a foreign language in high school and 85 or better on the Regents are exempt from GE foreign language requirement. Students are encouraged, however, to continue into 213 level language and beyond.
  • 2:15 p.m. - English Placement Exam - Yokum 206
    • NOTE: An English placement exam is required prior to registration into an ENG 101 College Writing II course. Students who have transfer credit for ENG 101 do not need to take the placement exam.
  • 3:10 p.m. - Calculus Readiness Test - Yokum 208
    • This exam is for students who will take a calculus course at any time in their Plattsburgh State career, to demonstrate their readiness to succeed in a first-semester calculus class.  Students planning to take calculus at Plattsburgh State must either pass this exam or take MAT 102 (Precalculus) before they can register for calculus.
  • 3:10 p.m. - Mathematics Competency Exam - Yokum 205
    • This exam determines appropriate placement into the required General Education Mathematics Skills course. NOTE: This exam is required if you do not have documentation of one of the following:
      1. Transfer credit that satisfies the mathematics skills requirement (refer to your CAPP report).
      2. An SAT math score of 460 or greater.
      3. An ACT math score of 16 or greater.
      4. Transfer credit equivalent to MAT 101.

Sunday, August 24

  • 3 p.m. LIB Proficiency Exam in Feinberg Library 108.
    • No pre-registration is required, just bring a Picture ID with you.

Chemistry Placement Exam and Calculus Readiness Exams  (On-line Access)

  • Available anytime prior to the beginning of the semester.
    • Placement into our general chemistry for science majors course (CHE 111) requires you to complete the Chemistry Placement Exam. Based on your performance on this examination, you will be eligible to be placed into either CHE 106 (a two semester approach to CHE 111) or CHE 111 directly.

      In addition, if your major requires calculus, you must complete the Calculus Readiness Exam. Based on your performance on this examination, will be eligible to be placed into a calculus section or into a section of Precalculus, MAT 102.

LIB Proficiency Exam

Anyone who has never received ANY grade for LIB105 is eligible to proficiency out of the LIB105 course by passing the LIB105 Proficiency Exam. To clarify, you are not eligible to take the Proficiency Exam if you already have a "W" or a grade for another library course on your transcript. A student may take the Proficiency Exam only once. Matriculation Ceremony

Sunday, August 24

  • Time: 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.
  • Location: Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall

A students-only event. Residence hall staff members will lead new students into the auditorium for their official welcome and matriculation.

Drop/Add for all matriculated students via Banner Web will be Sunday, August 24 at 5:15 p.m. through Sunday, August 31 at 11:30 p.m.. After August 31, a $20 late course-add fee will be applied. In addition, there will be a $20 fee for each course withdrawal processed beginning the second week of the semester.

Financial Aid

The Financial Aid Office, 4th floor Kehoe Administration Building, is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Financial Aid Office will also be open on Saturday and Sunday, August 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Students participating in the Federal Work-Study Program were mailed an information packet in early August. Log in to your account and go under the “Employment Opportunities” menu, and then the “Work-Study Position – Students” menu to view requirements and available jobs.

Payments and Refunds

Students who have not yet adjusted their bills, confirmed their enrollment, and/or paid their balances are encouraged to do so on MyPlattsburgh.

Student Accounts service windows and phones will be open Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23 and 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Normal window and phone hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. except on Thursday when they are open at 9 a.m. Student Accounts staff can be reached in person on the first floor of Kehoe. Student Employment (Career Development Center)

Students interested in part-time, temporary or summer employment on or off campus can stop by the Career Development Center (Angell College Center, Suite 118) to complete a registration form and review job openings.

Office Hours

  • Monday - Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Students do not have to demonstrate financial need to be eligible for these services, although they may need to be matriculated in a degree program.

Job Fair

The Part-time Job Posting Fair will be held on Monday, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Angell Center Cardinal Lounge. Students who are not eligible for work study but are seeking part-time jobs on campus or off campus should attend the fair to register for student employment and learn about current job openings (see Financial Aid section for work-study information). Come early to check out part-time jobs that are available on campus and in the local community

ID Cards

Students who need to have their photo taken may do so from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, through Friday, August 29.

Cardinal Cash

Cardinal Cash deposits may be made weekdays throughout the school year at College Auxiliary Services, located in Clinton Dining Hall, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Special hours will be on Saturday and Sunday, August 23 and 24 from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Deposits are also accepted at the Angell Center Desk and the Student Accounts Office (financial aid transactions) or online at

Parking Permits

All vehicles parked on campus must be registered with the University Police (UPD) and display a valid parking permit within 48 hours from the start of the new session. Veteran waivers are available with honorable discharge when DD-214 is filed with Parking Manager before the Sep 12th deadline.

Pre-registration starts Aug 1st. Save time...register early!

Register in 3 Easy Steps:

  1. Register vehicle in your MyPlattsburgh portal under the "auto registration link." 
  2. Confirm enrollment on your student bill. (Veterans must remove parking charges.) Late enrollees shall direct pay at Student Accounts, Kehoe 101, or by phone at 518.564.3120. 
  3. Pick up permit for pre-registered vehicles at Angell College Center, Aug 23-26, 10a-2p. Late enrollees shall pick up permits at UPD, Health Center Building, within 48 hours of registering.

Parking Shuttle

A free parking shuttle provides cross-campus service, every 15 minutes, from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday, when school is in session. Stops include SIBLEY, BANKS, HAWKINS, KEHOE, ACC, and TOWERS, with easy access parking at SIBLEY Hall.  Look for the green signs and buses.
