Spring 2016 Opening Week Information for New and Returning Students

Classes Begin:

Residence Halls open on Saturday, January 23 at 11 a.m. Check-in hours for New Students have been arranged for Saturday and Sunday, January 23 & 24 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Check-in will occur at the Housing Office, Algonquin 103.

Students who do not know their assignments should also report to the Housing Office. No-Shows forfeit room reservation: Tuesday, January 26 at 8 a.m. View listing of off-campus housing.

Admissions Office

The Admissions Office, located on the 10th floor of the Kehoe Administration Building, will be open Sunday, January 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

During these hours, newly admitted students to the Spring 2016 semester may stop in to discuss concerns related to their enrollment (e.g., transfer credit evaluations, change of major requests, college catalogs, etc.)

Placement Exams

Saturday, January 23

  • 2:15 p.m. - English Placement Exam - Yokum 206
    • NOTE: An English Placement Exam is required prior to registration into an ENG 100 College Writing I or ENG 101 College Writing II course. Students who have transfer credit for ENG 101 do not need to take the Placement Exam.
  • 3:10 p.m. - Mathematics Competency Exam - Yokum 205
    • This exam determines appropriate placement into the required 100-level Mathematics course beyond MAT 101, including the 100-level GE Skills courses. NOTE: This exam is required if you do not have documentation of one of the following:
      1. Transfer credit that satisfies the Mathematics Skills requirement (refer to your Degree Works report); OR
      2. SAT math score of 460 or greater; OR
      3. ACT math score of 16 or greater; OR
      4. Transfer credit equivalent to MAT 101.
  • 3:10 p.m. – Calculus Readiness Test - Yokum 205
    • This exam determines eligibility to take a first-semester Calculus course. Students planning to take a Calculus class should take this exam only if they have taken a Precalculus course in high school or elsewhere that DID NOT transfer to SUNY Plattsburgh as credit for MAT 102. Precalculus means a course BEYOND the New York State Regents sequence of Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra II/Trigonometry.  If you have never had a Precalculus course, you should take MAT 102 instead of this test. Note that some first-semester Calculus courses have an additional co-requisite of MAT 104 (Trigonometry).

Course Advisement and Registration

For new students who have not registered or who have questions for an academic advisor from their major department.

    Time: 10 a.m.
    Location: Clark Learning Center.

    Meet with department faculty to discuss appropriate course selection and learn about degree requirements, followed by on-line registration.

Drop/Add for all matriculated students via Banner Web will end Sunday, January 31 at midnight. After January 31, a $20 late course-add fee will be applied.  In addition, there will be a $20 fee for each course withdrawal processed beginning the second week of the semester.

Financial Aid

The Financial Aid Office, 4th floor Kehoe Administration Building, is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Financial Aid Office will also be open on Sunday, January 24, from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Spring refunds of financial aid over-payments are released during the first month of the semester via Higher One (see Refunds).

Students returning to the work-study program may begin working on January 25. Students offered first-time work-study awards for the spring semester can go on to look for positions that are open. Once a position is found go to the Financial Aid Office for the necessary paperwork.

Payments and Charges (Student Accounts)

Students who have not yet adjusted their bills, and/or paid their balance, are encouraged to do so on

Student Accounts staff can be reached in person on the first floor of Kehoe.

Opening Weekend Office Hours

Regular Window Hours

  • Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (except Thursdays when phones & windows open at 9 a.m.)

Students can receive refunds in one of the following three ways:

  • Easy Refund to the OneAccount using the Plattsburgh Debit Card (fastest)
  • ACH transfer to your bank (fast)
  • Paper check.

The Plattsburgh Debit Card is the key that students must have in hand in order to go online to, enter in the 16-digit number on the card front, and then make your choice for how you would like to receive future refunds. You should receive a Plattsburgh Debit Card in the mail within two weeks of registering for classes. Follow the instructions that accompany the card.

Student Employment (Career Development Center)

Career Development Center is a great resource for locating employment on and off campus. Students should login to CardinalConnect (through MyPlattsburgh; click on the CC button) to view current job openings. Students do not have to demonstrate financial need to be eligible for these services, although they may need to be matriculated in a degree program. The first week of the spring semester, the Part-Time Job Fest is held and students are strongly encouraged to attend. ID Cards

Students who need to have their photo taken may do so the following days:

  • Saturday, January 23 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, January 24 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Monday, January 25 through Friday, January 29 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

ID card office is located in Clinton Dining Hall.

Cardinal Cash

Cardinal Cash deposits may be made weekdays throughout the school year at College Auxiliary Services, located in Clinton Dining Hall, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Special hours will be on Sunday, January 24 from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Deposits are also accepted at the Angell Center Desk and the Student Accounts Office (financial aid transactions) or online at

  • Clinton Dining Hall: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. All meal plans Cash and Debit Accounts.

Sunday, January 24

  • Clinton Dining Hall: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. All meal plans Cash and Debit Accounts.
  • Tim Hortons (Angell Center): 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Flex meal Plans, Cash and Debit Accounts.
  • Angell College Center Griddles/Subway: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Flex Meal Plans, Cash, Debit Accounts. All Meal Plans 8p.m. to 12 a.m.
  • Sundowner (Angell Center): 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. All Meal Plans, Cash and Debit Accounts.

Monday, January 25

Parking Permits

Vehicles parked on campus shall properly display hang tags within 48 hours of the start of a session, or within 48 hours of registering in ('STUDENT SERVICES' tab to 'AUTO REGISTRATION' tab.)

If parking fees are not on student bill when confirming enrollment, email, or direct pay the fees at Student Accounts, Kehoe 101. Pick up hang tag from UPD, Health Center.

Please note: Fall session hang tags remain valid upon payment of the Spring session parking fees.
