Federal and State Financial Aid for Graduate Students

Federal Financial Aid

Matriculated graduate students attending at least half time may apply for assistance through the Federal Work-Study Program and the Federal Direct Student Loan Program. Students may work up to ten hours per week in the Federal Work-Study Program. Awards are about $2,200 at a wage rate of $7.15/hour.  An eligible graduate student may borrow up to $20,500 a year in combination of Federal Direct Subsidized and Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, or the cost of education minus financial resources, whichever is less.  Visit our loans page for more information on Subsidized and Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loans.

New York State Financial Aid

Fulltime, matriculated graduate students may be eligible to receive a NYS TAP Grant. Fulltime status is 12 or more credits for financial aid purposes.  The current annual maximum TAP award for a graduate student is $550. The minimum annual award is $75. TAP may be received for up to eight semesters of graduate study depending on the length of the program. Students who were EOP, SEEK, or HEOP participants during their undergraduate careers are eligible to apply for an Opportunity Tuition Waiver during fulltime graduate attendance. The waiver can cover the portion of tuition which is not covered by a New York State TAP grant. Interested students should follow regular admission application procedures and also secure an Opportunity Tuition Waiver application from the Plattsburgh Graduate Admissions Office. U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are Native American, African American, or Hispanic American are eligible to apply for SUNY Underrepresented Minorities Graduate Fellowships. Full-time enrollment is required. Stipend amounts are determined by the campus according to funds and number of qualifying students. Applications are available from the Plattsburgh Graduate Admissions Office.

Graduate Assistantships at SUNY Plattsburgh

A limited number of graduate assistantships are available for well-qualified, full-time, matriculated graduate students. The award is offered as a tuition waiver and a stipend, allowing participants the opportunity to grow professionally while pursuing graduate degrees. Assistantships are usually granted for an academic year but under special circumstances awarded for a single semester. The types of assistantships available at Plattsburgh are: residence hall director, administrative assistant and research/teaching assistant. Applications are available through the Graduate Admissions Office . Applications submitted by April 1st will be considered. The Melissa Lahtinen Penfield Memorial Graduate Foundation Fellowship is awarded annually to a fulltime matriculant in a masters program in Education. Preference is given to students in the Masters of Science in Teaching (MST) program and to graduates of either Seton Catholic High School (in Plattsburgh) or Plattsburgh High School. The award is a minimum of $1000/year, based on academic merit and is renewable. An application and brochure are available from the Graduate Admissions office.

Graduate Diversity Fellowship Program

SUNY Plattsburgh's Graduate Diversity Fellowship Program provides full in-state tuition for up to six students per year who contribute to the diversity of the student body in their graduate program and have overcome a disadvantage or other impediment to success in higher education.  The fellowship is awarded for two consecutive semesters and is limited to one award per person.  Recipients must be full-time students during the period of the award; in most cases this means enrollment in a minimum of 12 graduate credits applicable toward the degree each semester.  Continuation of the award into the second semester is contingent upon maintaining satisfactory progress toward degree.  An application can be downloaded from the Financial Aid Office forms page.

Financial Aid for Prepatory Enrollment

By department approval only, students may be permitted to attend on a prepatory basis, enrolling in courses required for consideration to become admitted into a graduate program. Students attending prepatory coursework on at least a half-time basis may be eligible for up to $12,500 in Federal Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loans. Additional eligibility criteria exist and are limited to a maximum of twelve, consecutive months.

Financial Aid for Non-Matriculation

Some students enroll in coursework for enrichment or professional development purposes. Students who are not admitted into a degree or certificate program are not eligible for federal, state or institutional financial aid. If interested, non-matriculated students may apply for an alternative student loan . Income and credit eligibility guidelines exist; contact the lender for more information.
