New Certificate to Prepare Professionals for Electronic Medical Record Systems
03:02pm EDT, 1 Jul 2013
PLATTSBURGH (July 01, 2013) — Beginning spring 2014 SUNY Plattsburgh will offer a new certificate program in the quickly expanding field of healthcare records management.
The 15-credit program, known as healthcare informatics, is aimed at professionals already in the field who are using or adopting electronic medical record systems.
The undergraduate certificate was developed to answer one of the major trends affecting healthcare today: the growing need of healthcare professionals as they transition from traditional paper-based systems to electronic medical records and digital imaging, according to Dr. Mohamed Djerdjouri, chair of the Department of Management, International Business and Information Systems in the School of Business and Economics.
According to a Bureau of Labor Statistics 2010 observation, employment in medical and healthcare informatics is expected to increase much faster than the average for all occupations in the United States.
“One reason the field of medical informatics is expanding at a high rate is because of the thousands of hospitals and physicians in the United States being required to transition to electronic record keeping,” he said. “As a result, there’s an increased demand for electronic record keeping and professionals who can lead and manage this effort.”
Students will take such courses as business applications and information systems; introduction to computing and the Web; healthcare informatics; healthcare management; database management systems; and e-healthcare models and processes, to name a few.
“This is a program that should be of interest to physicians, nurses, healthcare administrators, pharmacists and information technology professionals, among others,” Djerdjouri said.
