SUNY Plattsburgh Receives National Recognition for Workplace Quality

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (July 25, 2011) — SUNY Plattsburgh is one of the best colleges to work for in the nation, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education.
This is the second the time the college has received recognition through this program. The accolade comes from The Chronicle’s fourth annual report on the academic workplace, released today. The report is based on a survey of nearly 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities.
In all, only 111 of the 310 institutions achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results are reported for small, medium and large institutions, with SUNY Plattsburgh included among the medium colleges with student populations of 3,000 to 9,999 students.
The college received honors in three categories this year: Job Satisfaction; Supervisor or Department Chair Relationship; and Tenure Clarity and Process.
"We are happy to receive this special recognition," said Sue Welch, executive director for human resource services at SUNY Plattsburgh. "The Great Colleges to Work For survey gives us valuable feedback about what we are doing as a college and where we can make improvements. Furthermore, because we have ranked so highly on these measures, the results can only help us continue to attract the best and brightest faculty and staff.”
“We are proud of the work we have done to receive such recognition,” said SUNY Plattsburgh President John Ettling. “But we know that it is not over. As always, we continue to look for ways to retain the great employees we already have and to make our college even more attractive to prospective employees."
The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution; and a survey administered to faculty, administrators and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.
To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous “Best Places to Work” programs, surveying hundreds of thousands of employees nationwide.
