NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Plattsburgh State women's track and field team has been named a 2009 NCAA Division III All-Academic Track and Field Team by the United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Cardinals placed 65th out of 100 teams on the list, having carried a 3.290 grade point average during the 2008-09 school year.

According to the USTFCCA guidelines, the selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year award is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievements, with the top honor going to the team that had the combination of best overall finish at the respective Division III Indoor or Outdoor National Championships and cumulative GPA.

To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.100 cumulative grade-point average.

Jenny Schaffhouser led the Cardinals by provisionally qualifying for and competing at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in the 10,000-meter run. Heymann and Schaffhouser Head to National Meet

Indianapolis, Ind. - Plattsburgh State sophomore distance runner Mike Heymann already knew that he would be traveling to Marietta, Ohio May 21-23 to compete in the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track and Field Championships, having automatically qualified earlier in the season in the men's 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs, but the NCAA announced Sunday that he will also be joined by teammate Jenny Schaffhouser. Schaffhouser provisionally qualified for the women's 10,000m at the Penn Relays on April 24 and her time of 36:34.21 proved good enough at the end of the regular season to secure her a place at the national meet.

MHeymann.gifHeymann hit his qualifying mark for the 5,000m at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic and qualified for the event in the 10,000m at the Penn Relays. His 5,000m time of 14:24.55 currently stands at fifth in the nation in Division III, as does his time of 30:15.79 in the 10,000m--both marks set new school records. Heymann was also named First Team All-State University of New York Athletic Conference for his accomplishments this outdoor season.

"For Mike, we have been preparing for this weekend since after cross country. We went into the track season having the ultimate goal of running the 10,000m at the NCAA [Division III] Indoor Championships, with the 5,000m being a secondary goal," commented Plattsburgh head coach John Lynch. "Mike's massive improvement in the 5,000m is a bonus. After taking ninth in the event at the NCAA [Division III] Indoor Championships I could see even more motivation in him and I think that was clear in his two school record races over 10,000m and 5,000m this year. Mike is going into this meet rested and ready to go in both events."

Schaffhouser is currently 19th in the 10,000m at the Division III level. She received Second Team All-SUNYAC honors afterSchaffhouserWeb.gif finishing the SUNYAC Championships in second in the 5,000m run in a time of 18:03.76.

"This has been the goal since her break through race in cross country. We kind of trained through indoor and had hoped to get in a race at Penn Relays, but she was stuck in between two packs--running 25 laps by herself there--so her 10,000m qualifying time was a little slower than we had hoped. We were biting our nails for a month afterward watching runner after runner run faster times," Lynch admitted. "I think she slipped from 10th to 19th in that month. What she has going for her now, is that she has not run a 10,000m in a month and these other girls have--she is well rested and should take a shot at beating a bunch of girls ranked in front of her."

This will be Schaffhouser's first outdoor national championship appearance, prompting Lynch to add: "You can never count Jenny out; she is a championship-level racer. She has worked tirelessly this year to improve and make nationals--including improving more than two minutes from last year to make it--and I couldn't be happier for her."

"I am also enthusiastic about the knowledge he will bring to our strength and conditioning program from his time spent earning his masters degree at Virginia Tech. To qualify for the USTFCA All-America Scholar Track&Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and have met the NCAA Division III indoor or outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.

Busby (New Paltz, N.Y./Vestal Seton Catholic High School) was a second-team academic all-district choice as a junior before jumping to the first team this season and receiving national consideration.  She earned All-America honors with an 8th-place finish last fall after helping the Cardinals to the national runner-up trophy at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.  She was a 10k outdoor provisional. She carries a 3.94 overall GPA as a nutrition major, winning the 2008 Richard D. Semmler Award to honor the highest GPA for a female senior student-athlete at Plattsburgh.

Wiszowaty, of Shirley (William Floyd HS), was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the 10K and No. 3 in the 5K,  but couldn't compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships due to injury.  She won the 10K race at the famous Penn Relays in 33 minutes and 57 seconds that set an Olympic Trials "B" standard, SUNYAC and school records and ranks in the Top 5 all-time for Division III.  A 2008 NCAA Woman of the Year nominee, the six-time All-American captained the cross country team to its best NCAA showing in school history, placed second at the regional meet and helped the Cardinals to their first-ever Atlantic Regional title. The elementary education (English) major has a 3.95 GPA, and was an Oak Street Elementary School Mentor in Plattsburgh this year.

She has volunteered over 100 hours of community service teaching art to Keeseville Elementary students.

Coach's Corner

The Plattsburgh State coaching staff creates a family atmosphere for the track and field student-athlete. The environment that we create as coaches (which includes a diverse group of individuals) allows for a learning experience to happen inside and outside the classroom.

While enduring three seasons which span the entire school year it is important to establish a discipline with the student-athletes. This discipline becomes reflective in their overall academic and competitive outcomes. We expect high standards to be met by the student-athletes. These standards are based on consistent evaluation on the track, field, and in the classroom. Within this framework we also promote the overall enjoyment of the collegiate athletics experience.

Outstanding Performances

The Plattsburgh State women's track and field team has a rich history of All-Americans and a National Championship performance.

Eight Cardinals have reached All-America status and Plattsburgh State boasts a National Champion in Kathy Kane, who claimed first place at nationals in the 1500m in 1989.

Plattsburgh's All-American performances have come in a variety of events including:

The women's track & field team, like all intercollegiate athletics teams at Plattsburgh State, focuses on a commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement, and community service.
