Garrow, Papi Tabbed All-SUNYAC

FREDONIA, N.Y. -  Plattsburgh State women's tennis players Tiarra Garrow and Valerie Papi have been named to the All-State University of New York Athletic Conference Second Team.

Garrow, a sophomore from Plattsburgh who attended the National Sports Academic in Lake Placid, teamed with Papi at No. 1 doubles where the duo lost in the conference finals.  Garrow went 7-6 in her first season at No. 1 singles and 8-6 in doubles play.  She earned all-SUNYAC first team accolades as a freshman after winning the No. 3 singles title.

A junior from Washingtonville (Washington High School), Papi had an 8-6 doubles record in making the all-conference team for the first time in her career.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -  Follow the official results of the Plattsburgh State women's tennis team at the State University of New York Athletic Conference Championships by clicking on the following link:  http://www.sunyac.com/tennis/ .  The three-day event is held at the Eastside Racquet Club in Syracuse.

"We finished fourth overall in the tournament out of nine teams.  That's up from fifth place last season.  That's a good accomplishment based on where we started the season," Plattsburgh coach Mark Stata said.  "Everyone played at or above their potential.  We also finished ahead of Oneonta, which beat us 7-2 in the first match of the season."

The Plattsburgh State No. 1 doubles team of Tiarra Garrow and Valerie Papi turned in a second-place performance at SUNYACs over the weekend.

In Sunday's semifinals, the fourth-seeded team Garrow and Papi upset the top-seeded Brockport team of Ashley Balling and Kristen Hemingway, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2), to advance to the finals.

"Tiarra and Valerie had beaten them earlier in the season and that was their only loss in the conference," said Stata.

"We got off to a quick start with a 4-0 lead in the first game. And, then Tiarra and Valerie had to rally back from a 5-2 deficit in the second game."

In the championship match, however, Garrow and Papi fell to the third-seeded New Paltz team of Dana Lim and Eri Yamakawa, 6-0, 6-0.

"The girls ran into a buzzsaw," said Stata. "Lim and Yamakawa had just won a match over Geneseo in the semifinals that was a big point swing for New Paltz.

"I thought they might have a letdown in the finals, but it didn't happen. It was a better match, however, than the score would indicate."

In Saturday's quarterfinals, Garrow and Papi were 6-0, 6-0 winners over Oswego's Michelle Giorlando and Bridget McCarthy.

The Cardinals finished the team competition with 12 points.

"New Paltz was first, Geneseo second, Brockport third and then us. We beat out rivals like Oswego, Cortland and Oneonta along the way. The hard work paid off for us."

Plattsburgh State's No. 2 doubles team of Morgan Dupell and Katelyn Rogers made it to the semifinals Sunday where they were then defeated.

In the quarterfinals on Saturday, Dupell and Rogers posted a 6-4, 6-2 upset of Cortland's fourth-seeded team of Dayna Brent and Merchon Brower.

But, in the semifinals Sunday, New Paltz's top-seeded team of Laura-Elizabeth Beirne and Lyndsey Lovinger were 6-1, 6-2 winners over Dupell and Rogers.

"Beirne and Lovinger are very talented and they came out really strong," Stata said. "They both won singles championships at No. 3 and 4 just prior to the doubles semifinals and they were still pumped up after those matches.

"Morgan and Katelyn couldn't find the answer until late in the match."

Plattsburgh State's No. 3 doubles team of Danielle Circelli and Sumie Takamitsu was eliminated Friday night in a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Fredonia's Siera Sommerville and Elise Daigler.

Meanwhile, all six of Plattsburgh State singles players were eliminated in matches on Saturday after four of the six recorded victories in earlier contests.

Garrow was seeded second at No. 1 singles and, after getting a bye in the first round, avenged an earlier loss this season with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Cortland's Meg Cole in the quarterfinals.

Garrow, however, ran up against a red-hot player in the semifinals and dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Geneseo's Erica Pumple.

Papi, at No. 2 singles, posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Potsdam State's Jessica Castaneta before being eliminated with a 6-3, 6-3 setback to top-seeded Ashley Balling from Brockport.

Second-seeded Laura-Elizabeth Beirne from New Paltz recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dupell at No. 3 singles and Oneonta's Leanne Shaw was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Circelli at No. 4.

At No. 5, Rogers was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Potsdam's Samantha Duprey on Friday night before dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision to fourth-seeded Lindsey Trifiletti from New Paltz on Saturday.

The Cardinals also got an upset victory from Yasuko Aso at No. 6 singles when she rallied to defeat fourth-seeded Katie Keller from Brockport, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Aso then dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to New Paltz' Kerri Serkes, the second seed in the bracket.

Weekend Wrap-up:  Cardinals Open Season at Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team opened the 2007 campaign with a pair of neutral-site matches against State University of New York Athletic Conference foes Oneonta and New Paltz over the weekend.  The Cardinals lost a hard-fought match Saturday to the Red Dragons, 7-2, before getting shut out Sunday by the defending SUNYAC champion Hawks, 9-0.

Tiarra Garrow and Valerie Papi picked up the Cardinals' only victories on Saturday, winning in the top two singles slots.  Garrow, a 2006 SUNYAC champion at No. 3 singles, won in straight sets in her season debut at No. 1 singles while Papi lost just two games in her match.

Against New Paltz, Papi took the first set in her No. 2 singles match but couldn't sustain the momentum in a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 loss.

"We lost to a very deep and talented New Paltz team.  Although they dominated the doubles matches early, many of the games were close and they won a majority of the big points. The top two singles matches were well played and these close matches will help our players in the seedings meeting for the SUNYAC Championships," Plattsburgh coach Mark Stata said.

"We lost three very close pro-sets in doubles against Oneonta to put us in an early 3-0 hole.  Tiarra played very well," he said.  "Valerie played a smart match and outworked her opponent in a victory that pulled us within 3-2 for the match. But Oneonta's lineup proved to be too strong by winning the four remaining singles matches."

Women's Tennis Overview

Consistently one of the top teams in the conference with top three finishes in 1999 and 2000 and a runner-up finish in 2001, the Plattsburgh State women's tennis team is currently experiencing the highest levels of achievement in program history.

In Fall 2006, the Cardinals had three All-State University of New York Athletic Conference performers (Tiarra Garrow, 1st team; Ashley Smith, 2nd team; Ashley Abar, 2nd team) for the most in a single year during the Mark Stata coaching era.  Garrow captured a SUNYAC title at No. 3 singles as a freshman, and Smith was the conference's Fall Term Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award winner in her sport.  Plattsburgh finished in fifth place--and only two points out of fourth--at the SUNYAC Championships.

Over the past few seasons, the Cardinals have been ranked among the top 15 teams in New York State and have crowned numerous singles and doubles conference champions. The team competes in both the fall and spring seasons and carries a maximum roster of 12 players competing for six singles positions and three doubles positions.

The women's tennis team, like all intercollegiate athletics teams at Plattsburgh State, focuses on a commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement, and community service.
