Softball Goes 1-3 at Sea Gull Invitational

Salisbury, Md. - The weekend began rough with two-straight losses for the Plattsburgh State softball team, but ended on a better note with the Cardinals splitting day two at the Sea Gull Invitational hosted by Salisbury University. The Cardinals now stand at 5-13 on the year and will open up at home against Potsdam on March 31 at 3 p.m.

The team fell to No. 23 Ithaca College (1-6) and Salisbury (0-4) on Friday, but followed up early on Saturday with a nine-inning defeat of the College of New Jersey, 4-1. The team's trip to Maryland closed with a 2-0 loss to Capital University Saturday afternoon.

"Against Ithaca we just self-destructed and gave them six unearned runs. Then against Salisbury, they are just better than us right now. Heather Loughran gave up just two hits, and one happened to be a homerun," head coach Sean Cotter commented. "New Jersey was a really good come from behind win for us. Bri Allen pitched very well and Amy Woo stepped up and hit a three-run shot in the ninth--definitely therapeutic for us to get a win in such a heartfelt game. Unfortunately against Capital, we left a ton of people on base and Loughran was hit by the homerun again."

Fedyshyn, Amy Woo, and Nicole Diemer led the Cardinal offense with a double each. Erin Jamieson and Danielle Gjergji also contributed a base hit each during the contest.

Plattburgh was scheduled to take on Salisbury at 2 p.m., but due to rain that game has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 19, at 1 p.m.

Loughran Pitches First No-Hitter Against Virginia Wesleyan

Salisbury, Md. - Freshman pitcher Heather Loughran not only picked up her first career win and 14 strikeouts against Virginia Wesleyan, she also earned her first no-hitter for the Plattsburgh State softball team. Loughran's win came in the fourth game for the Cardinals at the Sea Gull Invitationall being hosted by Salisbury University. Yesterday, the team beat Shenandoah 5-1 and lost to Lynchburg 0-5.

In the game before Virginia Wesleyan, Plattsburgh suffered another setback to Moravian, 2-4. During that contest, Erin Jamieson recorded two hits and stole two bases for the Cardinals.

Aiding Loughran offensively in the second game of the day was Nicole McKee with two hits, including an RBI double, and Danielle Gjergji with two hits.

Plattsburgh now stands at 3-7 for the year and continue their Spring Break trip to Maryland tomorrow, March 15, with games against DePauw (noon) and Salisbury (2 p.m.).

Cardinals Thawing Out Slowly in Florida

Clermont, Fla. - The Plattsburgh State softball team has completed day two of their opening stint at the National Training Center in Clermont Fla. holding an overall record of 0-4, but it does not necessarily reflect the strides the young team has taken towards improvement. On Friday, the Cardinals fell to John Carroll University 11-4 and Moravian College 5-3. However, the team kept things closer on Saturday, losing to Manhattanville College 4-3 and the no. 16-ranked University of Rochester 3-2.

Freshman pitcher Bri Allen commanded the circle for 10 innings on Saturday and produced 10 strikeouts. "I think Bri really put herself on the map today with her performance," commented head coach Sean Cotter.

The pitcher from Rochester was close to pitching a perfect game against Plattsburgh during game two of the day, however Erin Florkiewicz broke that up by drawing out a walk in seventh inning. She was followed at the plate by Erin Jamieson, who reached first base on a throwing error which allowed Florkiewicz to advance to second. This set the stage for Amy Woo to break up the shutout with a drilled shot to centerfield which produced two RBIs for the Cardinals' second baseman. The rally did continue for long, however, and Dana Mandery lined out to end game with the Cardinals down 3-2.

Plattsburgh closes out its weekend in Florida with an 11 a.m. game against Emerson and a 3 p.m. game against no. 15 Washington-St. Louis tomorrow afternoon.

Zweig, Stephanie2_WEB.jpg PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Two-time State University of New York Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, two-time All-Northeast Region pitcher, 2006 Division III Third Team All-America selection, and three-time Jewish Sports Review All-America choice Stephanie Zweig has been named the new assistant coach for the Plattsburgh State softball team.

Four Named NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Four members of the 2008 State University of New York Athletic Conference regular-season champion Plattsburgh State softball team have been named All-America Scholar-Athlete by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Juniors Amy Woo and Ashley Napear, along with graduated senior Jaclyn Leitze and sophomore Kara Imai, received the honor.

"All four of these student-athletes represent the best of Cardinal softball," commented head coach Sean Cotter. "Jaclyn will truly be missed not only on the field, but more importantly as an outstanding ambassador for our college community."

All told, Cotter has produced 21 recipients of the NFCA award since 2000.

For Leitze, a right-handed pitcher from Burnt Hills, N.Y. (Ballston Lake High School), it is the second time her name has appeared on the NFCA list during her tenure at Plattsburgh. She was also the first four-time NFCA All-Northeast Region choice in school history, a three-time All-SUNYAC member and was awarded the SUNYAC Chancellor's Award in 2006 for having the highest overall grade-point average of any member of the all-conference team.

Leitze finished her career with a 1.54 earned-run average and struck out a SUNYAC-record and NCAA Division III 11th-leading 831 batters in 125 appearances during her four-year career as a Cardinal. She also compiled a 71-29 record.

Woo, a second baseman from Calgary, Alberta (Queen Elizabeth HS), was also honored in 2008 as a ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America finalist, third-team NFCA All-American, first-team NFCA All-Northeast Region and All-SUNYAC for the second year in a row. She finished the season batting .400, with 14 doubles, two triples, and six home runs for a slugging percentage of .688. She's a Latin American Studies major, with a minor in Spanish.

Napear, a designated player and infielder from Burke, Va. (Robinson HS), and Imai, an outfielder from North Vancouver, British Columbia (Argyle HS), both appear on the list for the first time. Both players major in criminal justice.

Coach's Corner

Photo of Sean Cotter Coach Sean Cotter:
"Our teams at Plattsburgh always have a few things in common. They all have a real determination to be the best, and are always real close knit groups. They have the desire to be the best both on and off the field and that always leads to good team dynamics. Part of that determination and closeness comes from our annual spring trip to California and our many off the field community service activities. We have high expectations for our student-athletes and in return they receive the opportunity to play softball at a highly competitive level, at one of the top facilities in the Northeast, within a highly supportive community." Softball

The softball team, established as a full intercollegiate sport in 1998, has already been established as a top conference contender. The team has improved each year, with season win totals of 9, 15, 21, and 31 in the first four seasons. Already in that short period of time, the Cardinals have appeared twice in the SUNYAC playoffs and earned a bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament.

The commitment to excellence is evident in all facets of Cardinal softball, from the pre-season preparation, to their involvement in community service projects, to the all-new Cardinal Softball Field, one of the top softball facilities in the Northeastern United States. Each spring, the Cardinals begin their season with a trip to California, to participate in the highly regarded SunWest Tournament. The team competes in one of the top athletic conferences in the nation, the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), and the conference champion gains automatic entry into the NCAA Championship Tournament.

The women's softball team, like all intercollegiate athletics teams at Plattsburgh State, focuses on a commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement, and community service.
