Plattsburgh State's men's soccer team was 12-1 through its first 13 games and was ranked as high as No. 5 nationally by the NSCAA before finishing the season with a 16-6 record and its 10th-straight post-season berth.
The Cardinals were tripped up by a tough conference road trip two-thirds of the way through the season that saw them lose games at Brockport and Geneseo and started a 1-3 skid.
The team finished third in the conference regular-season standings and defeated Geneseo in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament before bowing to eventual champion Cortland in the semifinals.
The squad then advanced to the ECAC Upstate NY Tournament final before falling to Rochester, 3-0.
Plattsburgh outscored its opponents 64-25, tied for its fifth-highest goal total ever.
Leading that outburst was freshman forward Mike Figliola (16g, 5a, 37 pts.), an honorable mention All-Conference pick. His goal total was tied fourth-best all-time on the team's single-season list and he also tied the sixth-best single-season scoring total.
Senior midfielder and 2001 All-American B.J. McGrane and senior back Joe Sacks each earned First Team All-Region and All-Conference honors, while senior back Dominic Salemi and sophomore midfielder Craig Carroll were Second Team selections. Senior midfielder Craig Hettinger also earned an honorable mention nod.
Along with McGrane and Sacks, sophomore goalie Jeff Adams (13-5, 1.15 GAA, 6 ShO) helped the team post eight shutouts and hold opponents to an average of just 1.1 goals per game.
