More Postseason Honors for Norchi

MLAXNorchiWeb.jpgCENTERVILLE, Mass.  - Plattsburgh State redshirt sophomore attacker Kyle Norchi has been named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III All-Upstate Men's Lacrosse Team, the league office announced on Wednesday.  Norchi, of Hauppauge, N.Y., becomes the first Cardinal to earn all-region honors from the ECAC.

After missing the 2008 season due to an injury, Norchi came back this year with totals of 56 goals, 15 assists and 71 points. He is fifth in the nation in goals scored (first in SUNYAC) and 14th in total points (first in SUNYAC).

Norchi's other postseason honors include New York State Division III All-Stars Second Team (also a first in program history) and All-State University of New York Athletic Conference Second Team.

One of only two Plattsburgh attackers to make all-SUNYAC twice, Norchi will be a team captain for the Cardinals in 2010.

Cardinals Rake in Postseason Accolades

FREDONIA, N.Y.  - The State University of New York Athletic Conference has named Plattsburgh State attackers Luke Weidlein and Kyle Norchi to the second team and Matt Maes earned honorable mention on the all-conference men's lacrosse team. The three selections ties a school record set last season.

A junior from Seaford High School, Weidlein receives his first all-SUNYAC nod after conference ranks of second in total points (70) and third in goals (43)--both career highs.  He currently lists 31st in NCAA Division III scoring at 4.12 points per game. He became the school's all-time leader in scoring (175 points) and assists (82) this season.

Norchi is a redshirt sophomore out of Hauppauge High, repeating on the all-conference team as a freshman in 2007, and joining Zack Boyce--who played from 2003 to 2006--as the only Plattsburgh attackers to make all-SUNYAC twice. Norchi missed all of last season due to an injury, but came back in 2009 with totals of 56 goals, 15 assists and 71 points. He currently is seventh in the nation in goals scored (first in SUNYAC) and 28th in points per game at 4.18 (fourth in SUNYAC). In addition, Norchi has been added to the New York State Division III All-Stars as a second team attackman--the first time a Cardinal has been chosen to the team featuring players from established programs like Cortland, Geneseo, Ithaca, Nazareth and Rochester Tech.

"It's great to see our players being recognized throughout the state for their accomplishments," said coach P.J. Kavanagh, who wrapped up his third season at the helm. "Kyle is a dynamic offensive player who has already scored 132 points in two seasons here at Plattsburgh.  He has been elected one of the captains for the 2010 Cardinals."

Maes, a senior midfielder from Lindenhurst High, also repeats on the all-conference team. He rates first in SUNYAC assists (39) and 11th in NCAA assists average (2.29). He exploded for career highs of 17 goals, 39 assists and 56 total points to break previous personal bests of 15, 9 and 24.

Cardinals Remain in SUNYAC Playoff Hunt; Edge Potsdam

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.  -  Plattsburgh State scored three goals and held Potsdam State scoreless in the fourth quarter on its way to a 9-8 victory Wednesday over the visiting Bears at the Field House Lacrosse Complex. Potsdam drops to 4-8 overall, including 1-5 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference.  The Cardinals (8-7, 3-3 SUNYAC) beat their North Country rivals for the second straight year after losing the first nine games in the series, and, more importantly, stay alive for the SUNYAC Tournament.

Plattsburgh can clinch its first postseason berth on Saturday (noon) with a win at Brockport.  The Cardinals and Golden Eagles are tied for the fourth and final playoff spot with identical 3-3 conference ledgers.  Plattsburgh leads the all-time series 5-2.

This afternoon, the teams were tied 4-4 at the intermission and Potsdam outscored Plattsburgh 4-2 to take an 8-6 advantage after three quarters.

Plattsburgh's comeback actually started with it trailing 8-5 before Mike Glynn went coast-to-coast for a beautiful unassisted goal with 4 minutes and 28 seconds left in the third.  Kyle Norchi scored the first of his two goals to open the scoring in the fourth, igniting a 3-0 Cardinals run over a 3:23 span beginning at the 11:37 mark. He scored what proved to be the game-winning tally with 8:14 left on the clock.

Goalie Matt Billia, who made 16 saves, and the Cardinals defense held Potsdam without a goal for the final 20:15.  Ryan Price contributed five ground balls and won 10 of 18 face-offs.

Potsdam's Ben McCullough led all scorers with two goals and two assists, and Todd Hosmer came off the bench to add three goals.

Norchi leads Plattsburgh with a career-high 44 goals and 56 total points on the season.

Nationally Ranked Cortland Edges Men's Lacrosse

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.  -  Despite being outshot by almost a 2-to-1 ratio, the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team gave No. 3-ranked SUNY Cortland all it could handle in a 12-8 loss Saturday in State University of New York Athletic Conference play at the Fieldhouse Complex. The Cardinals drop to the .500-mark at 6-6 and 1-2 in the SUNYAC while the Red Dragons improve to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Kyle Norchi and Luke Weidlein led Plattsburgh with three goals apiece, and Matt Maes chipped in three assists. Matt Billia registered a career-high 21 saves.

Mike Tota paced Cortland with a game-best four goals and an assist.  Brandon Misiaszek, Brian Krol and Conor Duffy each scored twice.  Matt Hipenbecker made nine saves in goal.

Cortland never trailed in the game, opening the scoring after 1 minute and 43 seconds gone in the first quarter with an unassisted goal by Brandon Misiaszek. Plattsburgh tied it 1-1 on a goal by Ian Helmer with 2:07 left, but Krol scored 7 seconds later to put the Red Dragons in the lead for good.

Cardinals Beat Oneonta for First Time

ONEONTA, N.Y.  -  The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team defeated Oneonta State for the first time in 10 meetings on Wednesday, edging the host Red Dragons, 16-14, in State University of New York Athletic Conference action. The Cardinals snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 6-5 overall, including 1-1 in SUNYAC. Oneonta falls to 4-6 and 0-2. Plattsburgh had gone 0-9 and was outscored 127-69 since the Oneonta series began in 2000--until this afternoon--as the Cardinals won their second conference road opener in three years.

Kyle Norchi scored back-to-back goals midway through the second quarter to ignite a Plattsburgh run of eight unanswered goals, turning a 6-3 deficit into an 11-6 lead late in the third. Norchi ended up with a game-high four goals and he added an assist.

Norchi was supported offensively by Luke Weidlein, who had three goals and two assists, and Adrian Marino matched Weidlein's totals.  Matt Billia turned back 14 shots while facing 44.

Blair Hanson and Troy Lepore led Oneonta with three goals each.  Nick Murray made 16 saves while seeing 50 shots.

Plattsburgh scored on all five man-up opportunities, was successful on 19-of-23 clears and had more ground balls (54 to 34).

Plattsburgh went into halftime leading 7-6 and never looked back after that huge 8-0 run.  In fact, the Cardinals doubled the score at one point, 14-7, before eventually closing within 15-14 on Ryan Waibel's goal with 1 minute and 35 seconds left in the game.  However, Weidlein added an insurance goal 36 seconds later to seal the win.

Cardinals Can't Hold Off Nationally Ranked Geneseo in Fourth

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.  - Visiting Geneseo State used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from a pesky Plattsburgh State squad on a soggy Saturday afternoon at the Fieldhouse Complex, taking a 12-5 victory in the State University of New York Athletic Conference men's lacrosse opener for both schools.  The 19th-ranked Blue Knights improve to 6-1 while the Cardinals dip even to 5-5 on the year.

Mike Cintineo led Geneseo with five goals and an assist, and Craig Lange added a goal and four assists.

Luke Weidlein (hat-trick), Patrick Wright and Jimmy Tenny scored for the Cardinals.

With Geneseo leading 7-3, Weidlein scored back-to-back goals with a man-down with 25 seconds left in the third quarter and at even strength 1:47 into the fourth to pull Plattsburgh within 7-5.  But the Blue Knights' offense responded with five unanswered goals to end the game and the defense stifled a Plattsburgh attack that is one of the nation's top offensively.  Tom Costanza scored consecutive goals 58 seconds apart about a minute after Plattsburgh's last tally to ignite a five-goal fourth quarter.

Matt Billia tied a career-high with 20 saves in a Plattsburgh uniform, facing 43 shots from Geneseo.

Dennis Costanza, who allowed a season-low five goals, made 16 saves for the Blue Knights, who allowed 33 shots.

Plattsburgh Falls at No. 20 SLU Saints

CANTON, N.Y.  - Plattsburgh State jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter lead against No. 20-ranked Saint Lawrence, but the Cardinals couldn't sustain that momentum in a 15-8 loss to the Saints in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Monday evening.  Plattsburgh drops to 5-3 while SLU improves to 4-2.

Alex Slauson, Peter Carroll and Caldwell Rohrbach scored three goals apiece for the hosts to offset a career performance by Adrian Marino--who tallied a game-best four goals--in a Plattsburgh uniform.

The Saints scored three goals in the second quarter while holding the Cardinals scoreless, taking a 4-3 lead into the intermission.

Plattsburgh opened the second half with a game-tying goal by Patrick Wright, unassisted, just 1 minute and 46 seconds gone.  But Caldwell Rohrbach scored a man-up tally 1:06 later, igniting a 5-0 SLU run to seize control at 9-4.

PERRY, N.Y.  - Perhaps for the first time in school history, the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team has earned recognition in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III Top 20 coaches' poll.  The Cardinals, who are 5-2 overall, were in the "others receiving votes" category along with seven other teams.  So if the poll was extrapolated, Plattsburgh would be among the Top 30 teams ranked in the nation; there are 151 schools that sponsor men's lacrosse at the NCAA Division III level.

Billia also Named Goalie of the Week by ECAC

CENTERVILLE, Mass.  -  The Eastern College Athletic Conference has named Plattsburgh State senior Matt Billia as the Division III Upstate Goalkeeper of the Week, becoming the first Cardinal goalie ever to win the regional award that includes student-athletes from the State University of New York Athletic, Empire 8 and Liberty League conferences.  The Baldwin (N.Y.) High School product also earned similar honors from the SUNYAC earlier this week.

Billia recorded a career-high 20 saves and three ground balls in a 19-12 victory over Western Connecticut on Saturday. He stopped 20-of-31 shots on goal he faced for a .645 save percentage against a Colonials team that was recently receiving votes in the USILA Division III coaches' poll. For the season, he owns a 3-1 record and 10.83 goals against average.

SUNYAC Honors Weidlein, Billia Both for Second Time this Season

FREDONIA, N.Y.   -  The State University of New York Athletics Conference has named Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse student-athletes Luke Weidlein and Matt Billia player and goalie of the week, respectively.  The period ended Sunday, and the Cardinals become the first SUNYAC team to sweep both awards in the same week.

A junior attacker from Seaford High School, Weidlein led Plattsburgh with five assists and eight points to go along with two ground balls in a 19-12 road victory Saturday at Western Connecticut, which was receiving votes in last week's USILA national rankings Division III poll. He tied Dan Kalberer (1999-2001) for the school all-time assists record with 67. For the season, he leads the team with 17 goals and 29 points in four games.  He was also the conference player of the week for March 2.

A senior out of Baldwin High, Billia repeats as the SUNYAC goalie of the week after recording a career-high 20 saves and three ground balls in the seven-goal victory over the Colonials on Saturday. He stopped 20 of 31 shots on goal he faced for a .645 save percentage. For the season, he owns a 3-1 record and 10.83 goals-against average.

 Cardinals Win Fourth Straight Game

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.   - The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team defeated Goucher College, 17-7, in a non-conference game on Monday evening, raising the Cardinals' record to 4-1 on the season.  The schools met on a neutral field on the campus of Christopher Newport University.  The Gophers of the Landmark Conference fell to 4-2.

Kyle Norchi led Plattsburgh with five goals and two assists, and Matt Billia earned the win in goal.  Ian Helmer and Adrian Marino helped anchor the midfield as Helmer had a career-high five points (2 goals, 3 assists) and Marino added three goals.

"Ian and Adrian did a great job on our second midfield line, controlling tempo and getting ground balls," Plattsburgh coach P.J. Kavanagh said after the game.

"I'm really proud of the guys coming out and playing the way they did.  Our defensive team effort was tremendous."

Cardinals Use Strong First Quarter to Win at West Conn.

DANBURY, Conn.  - Luke Weidlein had eight points, including five assists, and Kyle Norchi and Matt Maes each scored four times to help visiting Plattsburgh State to a 19-12 non-conference men's lacrosse victory Saturday at Western Connecticut at The WAC.  The Cardinals have won three straight after losing in their season opener while the Colonials are now 1-2.

"This was a big win for us because (Western Connecticut) was receiving votes in the Top 20 national rankings last week," Plattsburgh coach P.J. Kavanagh said. "With 12 assists on 19 goals, we did a good job of sharing the ball.  I thought our midfield gave us a lift, too."

In goal, Matt Billia had a career-high 20 saves in a Cardinals uniform.   Kyle Wood and Tyler Martone platooned for the Colonials.

Sean Macey and Adam Lanehart led the Western Connecticut offense with three goals apiece.

Plattsburgh had big first and fourth quarters to outscore the hosts 8-4 and 5-2 in the respective frames.

It was also a physical contest as the teams combined for 30 flags and 25 penalty minutes.  Plattsburgh scored four man-up goals while the Colonials had three.

Cardinals Fall on Road in Season Opener

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Luke Weidlein scored a career-high six goals for Plattsburgh State on Friday, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals lost 13-12 at Merchant Marine Academy in a men's lacrosse non-conference game.  It was the season opener for both schools, but this marked the earliest date to start a season in Plattsburgh history.  This was also the first-ever meeting between the teams.

Plattsburgh grabbed a 5-4 lead after the first quarter on goals by Weidlein (3), JT Prior and Jimmy Tenny.  The Cardinals also carried an 8-6 advantage at halftime.

But the third quarter belonged to Merchant Marine, which scored four times to take a 10-8 lead while holding the visitors scoreless.

In the fourth quarter, Weidlein, Bryan Copius and Matt Maes scored in the first 3 minutes and 44 seconds as Plattsburgh reclaimed the lead, 11-10.  However, Brennan Dougherty scored the last of his game-high seven goals to ignite a USMMA 3-goal rally and they never looked back.

Cavanagh Named to Assistant Coaching Post

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State director of athletics Bruce Delventhal and men's lacrosse coach P.J. Kavanagh have named former Cardinals player Ryan Cavanagh as the team's top assistant coach.

"We are excited about Ryan Cavanagh joining our staff because he brings a wealth of knowledge, both at the specialty positions of goalie play and face-offs, as well as on the defensive side of the ball," Coach Kavanagh said.  "We had a strong candidate pool for this position, and we are confident that we are getting an excellent assistant coach in Ryan.  He is from Long Island, which has proven to be a valuable recruiting source for our team in recent years, so we are thrilled to have him recruiting student-athletes who are from his home region of the state."

"It will be a great feeling to give back to a program that gave so much to me when I was a student-athlete," added Cavanagh.  "The program has grown since I came to Plattsburgh as a sophomore in 2005.  And I'm looking forward to the opportunity of helping the Cardinals advance to the next level."

Cavanagh last season served as a student assistant coach, helping Plattsburgh to an 8-8 record.  He groomed face-off specialist Ryan Price to set a school record with 99 ground balls in a season while ranking second in the State University of New York Athletic Conference with a 6.19 average per game.

Cavanagh played for the Cardinals from 2005-07 after his collegiate career began at Nassau Community College.  He earned All-SUNYAC honorable mention honors as a senior, ranking second in the conference and 20th in NCAA Division III with a .630 face-off winning percentage.

Cavanagh, a former team captain, was a political science major.  He is from Northport and graduated from Kings Park High School.

He replaces Kenny Pierson who was a member of the coaching staff for the past three seasons.
