The women's hockey team was the runner-up in the ECAC West regular-season standings and the league tournament.
The squad won 14 of its last 16 games, including separate winning streaks of eight and six games, to finish with an 18-5 record overall and a 10-2 mark in the ECAC West. In the conference tournament, PSU downed Utica 5-0 in the semifinals to set up a rematch with top-ranked Elmira, which it lost, 4-2.
The Cardinals defeated nationally ranked Williams December 7 on the road. The team's only losses came at the hands of ranked teams, including three to defending national champion Elmira.
Plattsburgh outscored its league opponents, 91-16.
Elizabeth Gibson led the nation, the conference and the team in scoring (27g, 24a, 51 pts.). She was second nationally in scoring in 2001-02. Gibson, Lynn Taylor and Erin O'Brien were named ECAC West First Team All-Conference, while Lindsay McCafferty and Chantalle Rye earned Second Team honors. Rye and McCafferty were also named to the All-Rookie squad. Gibson, McCafferty and Lisa Bettencourt earned All-ECAC West Tournament accolades.
