Greene Tabbed to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America District Team

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - Eric Greene of the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team has earned recognition on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I College Division Men's At-Large Second Team, becoming the first Cardinal skater to win the award since 2002 when goalie Niklas Sundberg made the first team and then placed on the Academic All-America Second Team.

The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) operates the ESPN The Magazine-sponsored academic program, and is selected by its members from NCAA Division II-III, NAIA schools in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Canadian schools of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Quebec.  To be eligible, a nominee must have at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average, reach sophomore-year standing at their institution and be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic statistics.  The at-large team is the biggest of the CoSIDA academic programs consisting of the following sports:  women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and men's wrestling.

A senior defenseman from Cedar Knolls, N.J., Greene graduated this May with a degree in finance (economics minor) and had a 3.51 cumulative grade-point average at the time of his nomination.

Greene helped a defense that set school records for goals-against average and fewest goals allowed in each of the last two years, ranked first in SUNYAC scoring defense (1.93) and third in NCAA Division III.  Voted the State University of New York Athletic Conference Best Defensive Defenseman of the Year by the league's head coaches, Greene had a career year in scoring with three goals and six assists for nine points.  He was one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Mellon Hockey Humanitarian Award out of nearly 100 entries from all NCAA levels.  He was a two-time SUNYAC champion and NCAA Tournament participant.

Off the ice, Greene was active in numerous community service projects.  He was the Make-A-Wish Foundation Cardinal hockey dinner co-chair that saw record attendance for the charity event held annually during the Christmas break.  He was the team liaison for assistant equipment manager Matt Thomson who has Down Syndrome.  He also raised money for Special Olympics of Clinton and Essex counties, American Heart Association and North Country Down Syndrome Association.  Last week, Greene received a recognition award from the National Down Syndrome Society for his positive role in advocating and promoting awareness of Down syndrome to the Plattsburgh area.

The three-time Academic All-SUNYAC and Commissioner's List recipient now works as a real estate broker and once interned on Wall Street.  Greene also will be the head coach of the N.J. Colonials AAA team next season.

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Plattsburgh State men's hockey defensemen Eric Greene and Ward Smith were recently honored by the National Down Syndrome Society with recognition awards for their for their positive roles in advocating and promoting awareness of Down syndrome to the Plattsburgh area.  They were endorsed by the North Country Down Syndrome Association.

"Their impact on the lives of all people with Down syndrome is nothing short of amazing; however, two particular lives will never be the same," said Cindy Rotz of the NCDSA. "The bond between Eric and Matt Thomson as well as the relationship between Ward and Brett Rotz is an excellent example of people accepting each other for who they are and changing lives as they do it.  These student-athletes serve as role models to all who live in the Plattsburgh area to foster total acceptance, led by the coaching staff of Bob Emery and Steve Moffat."

Knights Shock Cardinals in Overtime

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Bill Foster scored his second goal of the game 2 minutes and 35 seconds into overtime to lift No. 12-ranked Neumann College to 5-4 upset at top-ranked Plattsburgh State in an NCAA Division III men's hockey quarterfinal game at Stafford Ice Arena. The Knights (19-9-2), who are making their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, advance to the final four in Lake Placid, N.Y., on March 20-21. The Cardinals (24-2-2) saw two long streaks ended on Saturday night: 12-game winning overall and 19 wins at home. BOXSCORE

Forwards Phil Farrow and Joey Wilson led Plattsburgh with two goals apiece. Defenseman Ryan Corry contributed three assists.

In addition to Foster, Kyle Casey scored twice and assisted on Michael Hedden's 17th goal of the season that gave visiting Neumann a 1-0 lead with 7:24 gone in the opening period.

It was a see-saw game in which there were four ties and neither team led by more than a goal.

Wilson scored his team-leading 24th goal at the 14:12 mark of the third period as Plattsburgh led 4-3. But just 10 seconds later, Casey netted his 11th of the season to force the extra session.

Plattsburgh had a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead late in regulation when Neumann was whistled for minor penalty of too many men on the ice. But the Cardinals couldn't convert on the power play in the final 1:02 of the third period and 58 seconds into overtime.

Plattsburgh outshot Neumann 29 to 27 for the game, including a decisive 4-1 edge in overtime.

"I'm proud of our guys. I thought we played hard," Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said after the game. "We'll take this as a learning lesson and move on. We just didn't get it done. (But) We had a great year."

Neumann coach Dominick Dawes said in his postgame press conference: "We played a very skilled Plattsburgh team that's ranked No. 1. They deserve that. But we also deserve to be advancing in the NCAA tournament. Our guys played well and grinded out a win."

Former Cardinal Hockey Player Jason Vasco:
From Guarding the Goal to Guarding the Nation

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team is in a battle for a third national championship - which the program last won during the 2000-01 season. The top-ranked Cardinals' quest begins on Saturday when they host Neumann College in the NCAA Division III Tournament Quarterfinals.

Sgt. Jason Vasco is on a mission to fight the War on Terrorism on the other side of the world as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces.

What do Cardinal Hockey and Sgt. Vasco have to do with each other, you may ask? Vasco was a senior on the 2003-04 team that went 23-5-3 overall, won the State University of New York Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals. The Clifton Park, N.Y., product was 2-0 with a 2.93 goals-against average as a back-up goaltender in his only season at Plattsburgh. He previously attended and played college hockey at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

These days, Sgt. Vasco has been stationed in northern Iraq near the city of Tikrit since October. He is with the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division based out of Fort Drum. As an intelligence analyst, his job is to support air and ground operations all over MND-N (Multi National Division-North), supervising up to four men on his shift. After his days on the ice ended, Sgt. Vasco knew exactly the career path he was going to take as a member of the U.S. Army.

"When I joined the service as a Specialist, my choices were infantry, medical and military intelligence. I chose Intelligence because I thought I could have a larger impact on America's War on Terror," he said. "An infantryman only has one rifle and a medic can save only one person at a time. While those military occupations aredemanding and fulfilling, I chose intelligence because I could target large groupsof the enemy at one time and potentially save countless lives with accurate and timely intelligence."

Sgt. Vasco also describes getting a thrill out of what he does professionally, pointing out that "depending on the day some days are boring, and some are anything but boring.

"I would say the most exciting, and rewarding, part of my job is developing an accurate depiction of enemy action in order to inform superiors of the potential threat our guys will face," he said.

"I'm proud of Jason. We always talked when he was a player here that he was going into military service to protect American freedom," remembers Coach Bob Emery, who is in his 20th season at the helm of the Cardinals. "Jason is an example of something that we believe in wholeheartedly here at Plattsburgh: Learning life lessons is important along with winning hockey games."

Sgt. Vasco credits his experience as a Cardinal hockey player with helping him transition into military life. He notes that having the privilege to play college sports and working in the military share a similar attribute: the sum is greater than the individual parts.

"Everything I've learned as a Cardinal has helped me to be a better soldier, including the toughness that hockey demands. As a soldier it is imperative that one must be physically and mentally tough. As a Cardinal, I never gave up on the cause of winning a hockey game," he stated.

"As a soldier, it's the same thing. Some days things go our way here and other days they don't. It's the days that don't go our way when I reach back to memories as a hockey player and remember that we need to learn from our mistakes, toughen our defense, and dig down deep within ourselves in order to be successful. I think every soldier has a little hockey player within. In addition, the teamwork that I learned, the feeling of camaraderie, and the notion that the cause, or team concept, are more important than each individual has stuck with me."

While Sgt. Vasco spends most of his time concentrating on helping to protect United States interests, he still holds Plattsburgh hockey close to his heart. He follows the Cardinals via the internet on LiveStats (http://www.sidearmstats.com/plattsburgh/mhockey/ ) and WIRY 1340 AM Hometown Radio's audiostream. He also spends his down time reading, watching comedies and studying.

"Their run this year has given me something to look forward to every weekend. I'll be sad when the season is over, but that is just one more benchmark I have on my calendar to check off.each check means I'm closer to coming home," Vasco mused. "I've also been following the Boston Bruins. They have always been my favorite NHL team and you can bet that Boston winning the 2009 Stanley Cup would be a nice bench-mark to check off the calendar."

"I'm happy that he follows the program while in Iraq. He keeps in constant communication with our coaching staff. I'm proud that he takes a piece of Cardinal Hockey with him into the battle grounds," Emery said.

Sgt. Vasco's blood still runs Cardinal Red and has fond memories of his Plattsburgh days after five years away from a 6,200-student campus that is nestled in the North Country of Upstate New York, bordered by the Adirondack and Green mountains and Lake Champlain.

"My most memorable experience as a Cardinal hockey player would definitely be the support we received from the fans, town and school. We were very successful during my stint as a Cardinal, and memories of victory after victory are ingrained forever in my mind," Vasco recalled. "Memories of the friendships and sportsmanship I share with each teammate are fantastic. However, it was the unwavering support the team received from the College and regional community that stands out to me. After every game, we would stand at center ice as a team and thank the fans for coming to see us play. I still get chills of memories of the applause we received, win or lose."

After Sgt. Vasco's deployment is scheduled to end in late 2009, he plans on attending Georgetown University to pursue a Master of Arts degree in National Security following an honorable discharge from the military.

"I've started the application process, and I hope furthering my education in the cause of national security will help me better serve my country and protect the future of America. After all, that is what this is all about." After all, that's what Sgt. Vasco embodied as a student-athlete: You don't have to be a superstar to make a positive impact on other people's lives and help make a difference in today's ever-changing world. = Plattsburgh State Athletics=

Oswego's Tim Potter had 28 saves while Hince stopped 26 shots.

However, the No. 10 nationally-ranked Lakers (18-8-1) were able to kill off their hooking and delay of game penalties, but likely not keep alive their NCAA tournament hopes.

Media Guide Cover Voted Best in the Nation

PHILADELPHIA - The Plattsburgh State 2007-08 men's and women's ice hockey guide covers were judged Best in the Nation by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Sports Information Office of Director Patrick Stewart and Assistant Director Kerry Chapin will be formally recognized during a publications awards ceremony on July 2 at the CoSIDA Workshop Convention in Tampa, Fla. CoSIDA CONTEST RESULTS

The Cardinals' sports information office was the lone representative honored by CoSIDA to receive national certificates in the entire SUNY system, including the State University of New York Athletic Conference membership. The two certificates match the school's best output since last season when the men's soccer and women's hockey guide covers were voted Best in the Nation in Division C, including 400-plus NCAA Division III and junior college institutions.

The cover concept was created by Stewart and Chris Boire of Boire Design perfected the full-color layout. The women's guide, featuring All-Americans Julie Devereux and Danielle Blanchard sandwiching the program's first NCAA championship trophy on a red-bleed cover, was entered in the Single-Sport Category. The cover took first place in Division C while the book itself was 21st despite being combined with Division A-B, which includes NCAA Division I and II programs. Like women's hockey, the men's hockey book--with the leadership group of C.J. Tozzo, Tom Breslin, Joey Wilson, Nick Rolls and T.J. Cooper on the cover--was grouped with larger schools to end up fifth overall but won Division C cover laurels. (Click on cover for online version of men's hockey media guide)

Stewart has garnered 24 CoSIDA certificates for publications and writing excellence, including 13 Best in the Nation plaudits. Chapin earns her third award of her three-year sports information career. Boire also worked on Plattsburgh's Best Cover citations for 2004 Women's Soccer, 2003-04 Men's Hockey, 2006 Men's Soccer and 2006-07 Women's Hockey.

Plattsburgh's other national rankings in the CoSIDA publications contest for this academic year include Men's Soccer book, 16th; Women's Soccer book, 16th; Women's Basketball book, 23rd; Men's Basketball book, 27th; Cross Country/Track Multi-Sport Guide, 20th; and Women's Volleyball, 32nd.

Coach's Corner

Head Coach Bob Emery Coach Bob Emery:
"The best thing about this program is working toward and meeting the challenge of high expectations. Winning has been fun in the past, but what happens is that you establish your own high-water mark. With that comes high expectations on an annual level, from the team, the coaches and the fans. Historically, we've been able to meet those expectations.

"All our returning players know what is expected of them and of the program. When you talk about our top guys, they realize that if they don't meet expectations they won't have fun. To do that, they have to enjoy the game first. All of our freshman must be prepared to make an immediate impact. There is an adjustment to college hockey, some guys make it faster not necessarily even the best players but all players have to work hard to raise their level of play to where we are."

A Traditional National Power

After finishing their collegiate careers, many Cardinal Hockey players use their experience garnered at Plattsburgh State to play professional hockey, evidenced by over 50 former Cardinals that have played or are currently playing professional hockey.

The Cardinals play in the 3,500-seat Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena, one of the finest facilities for NCAA College Division Hockey in the Nation. The Stafford Arena has been host to three NCAA Championships, international exhibitions, and was originally used for the World University Games. The Cardinals regularly draw over 2,000 fans per game, including 10 record-setting attendance marks over 3,500, and the team has led the nation in total attendance six times since 1996.
