Plattsburgh State Hall of Fame
2009 Hall of Fame Inductees Announced
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (July 15, 2009) -- The Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame Committee has selected the 2009 list of inductees. The quartet will be honored at a luncheon ceremony to be held on Dec. 5 (noon) in the Warren Ballroom at the Angell College Center, including Heather (Myrick) Mathews '93, Dave Piromalli '89, John Carpenter '73 and Danny Brown '79.
That announcement was made by the Plattsburgh State Athletics Department and the Office of Alumni Affairs on Wednesday. For more information about the ceremony, contact the Alumni Office at (518) 564-3090.
Mathews competed in track and field while attending Plattsburgh and was a three-time NCAA Division III All-American in outdoor events (twice in long jump, once in triple jump) and earned one NCAA All-American honor for indoor triple jump. Mathews was also named the Plattsburgh State Female Co-Athlete of the Year for the 1992-93 school year and was the Cardinals' Most Valuable Player for outdoor track and field in 1993.
Piromalli captained the Cardinal men's hockey team during the 1986-87 season after earning All-American Second Team honors the year before. Upon completing his career, Piromalli held the school record for goals (121), points (298), power-play goals (55), and game-winning goals (16). He was named to the All-State University of New York Athletic Conference First Team twice and the 1987 NCAA All-Tournament Team. In addition, Piromalli was honored with a spot on the Cardinal All-Decade Team for the years spanning 1985-94, which was chosen by a committee of school officials and former players.
Carpenter will become the first Plattsburgh State football player inducted into the Hall of Fame this December. Football existed at Plattsburgh from 1969-78. During his three seasons on the gridiron for the Cardinals (1970-72), Carpenter etched his name into the school record book with a 74-yard punt against Albany in 1971. Also that season, Carpenter led the team with four interceptions and averaged 35 yards on a total of 50 punts. He was also chosen by Albany to be part of that school's All-Opponent team. He also spent a season with the Plattsburgh baseball team in 1970.
Brown is the second Cardinal men's hockey alumni to be inducted this year, along with Piromalli. Brown captained the Cardinals during the 1977-78 season and helped the program to two SUNYAC titles in 1978 and 1979. He was named first-team All-SUNYAC in 1979 and first-team All-NYCHA in 1978 and 1979. The Cardinals finished with a record of 44-7 during the two seasons Brown skated for the squad. He still holds a place on the all-time single-season school list for goals (7th, 35), assists (T-8th, 51) and points (T-7th, 86)--completing a career year in 1978.
2008 Class to be Inducted into Sports Hall on Oct. 17
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Plattsburgh State Athletics Department and the Office of Alumni Affairs jointly announce the 2008 induction class for the Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame. They include Ron Cameron '77 (men's track & field, men's soccer), Joey Ferras '88 (men's ice hockey), Paul Glodis '84 (men's basketball), Nick Goddard '76 (men's soccer) and Donovan Scott '87 (men's soccer).
The 2008 Class brings to 72 the number of inductees since the Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame established in 1984 to honor the accomplishments of former student-athletes as well as services and contributions of administrators, coaches and friends to Plattsburgh State Athletics.
They will officially be inducted on Friday, Oct. 17, during the College's Homecoming week. The induction ceremonies will take place at 4 p.m. in the Warren Ballrooms of the Angell College Center, and the cost is $22 per person.
Ron Cameron played on the men's soccer team from 1974-75 and ran track in 1976-77 at Plattsburgh State.
Cameron made his mark as a track and field athlete, garnering All-America accolades in the 1600-meter relay (third place) and 400 high hurdles (fourth place) at the 1976 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. He helped the Cardinals to a 10th-place tie in the team standings.
At the time of his graduation, Cameron held State University of New York Athletic Conference records in the intermediate hurdles and 1600 relay, both set in 1976.
He was the SUNYAC champion in the 440-yard intermediate hurdles in 1975 and '76, helping the Cardinals claim their only conference championship during his senior campaign--two seasons removed from when the team scored only six points in the SUNYAC meet.
Cameron today resides in Ballston Lake with his wife Diane and three children. He works for the U.S. Postal Service and coaches prep track&field at Scotia High School.
Joey Ferras ended his prolific four-year career in 1988 as the all-time leading scorer in NCAA ice hockey history, men's or women's, for any Division. At the time of his 2008 induction into the Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame, his 359 career points still stands as a national record.
Ferras also holds school records for career goals (125), career assists (234), career power-play goals (60), assists in a season (69 in 1987-88), points in a season (99 in 1987-88) and power-play goals in a season (21 in 1986-87).
Ferras was the first Cardinal hockey forward ever to be selected twice to the AHCA All-America First Team. As a junior in 1986-87, he scored 38 goals and had 54 assists for 92 points. He followed up that performance a season later with 30-69-99 scoring totals.
Ferras was a two-time first-team all-conference selection as he helped the Cardinals to three SUNYAC championships in 1985, 1987 and '88. Plattsburgh went 111-43-1 for a .719 winning percentage during his 143-game career, including a 43-5 mark (.896) in conference play.
Currently, Ferras is the head coach and director of operations for the Rapid City (S.D.) professional hockey club. He is married to Aynsley Chomiski and he has a step-son.
Paul Glodis starred for Plattsburgh from 1979 to 1983, when he compiled 1,119 career points. He finished his career fifth on the school's all-time scoring chart, and ranked eighth at the time of his 2008 Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame induction.
Glodis is the only men's basketball player in the Hall to have scored 400 points twice, doing so in back-to-back seasons. He poured in a career-best 450 as a junior in 1981-82, more than doubling his point-total from the previous season. Then as a senior, he made 405. He earned first-team all-SUNYAC and all-region honors in both of those seasons.
Glodis lists eighth all-time for field goals made in a season with 189 in 1981-82. Known as one of the best shooters in school history, he made 61.4 percent of his field goal attempts for fifth-best in a single season in 1982-83 and 59.2 percent for eighth all-time in 1981-82.
The 1979 Cardinals were SUNYAC tri-champions during his freshman campaign, seeing the Red and White post an 18-9 record (9-2 in conference) and earning a spot in the ECAC Upstate Tournament.
Glodis, of Lakeworth, Fla., is a regional operations manager for Federal Express. He is married to his wife Michele, and the couple has a daughter.
Nick Goddard (1972-75) was the first Plattsburgh men's soccer player chosen to the All-SUNYAC First Team all four years of his collegiate career.
A three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-New York State choice, including first team in 1975, Goddard capped his senior year with 11 assists that was a single-season school record at the time. Currently, his 11 assists are tied for fourth all-time.
He signed a contract to play professionally with the Minnesota Kicks of the North American Soccer League in 1976.
In 1975 he helped the Cardinals to the finals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate Tournament when the team had an overall record of 9-6-1.
Goddard is a kitchen designer for Home Depot in Lakewood, Colo., where he lives with his wife Kate and two children.
Donovan Scott was a two-time All-American (chosen to third team in both 1983 and '84) for the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team from 1982-85.
Scott was the second player in school history to be named first-team all-SUNYAC all four years.
In addition, Scott was selected All-New York State by the NSCAA four times: third team as a freshman, second team as a sophomore and to the first team both his junior and senior years.
In 1982 he helped the Cardinals to the finals of the ECAC Upstate Tournament when the team had an overall record of 11-6-1. The team also captured the Castleton State tournament with wins over the host Spartans, 2-0, and Husson, 3-1, that season.
Scott owns a real estate/mortgage business based out of New York City. He and his wife, Antoinette, have a daughter.
2007 Class Enshrined to Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame
The Plattsburgh State Athletics Department and the Office of Alumni Affairs announced that six new members would comprise the 2007 induction class for the Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame, including Jim Duran '92 (men's ice hockey), Jeff Gadley '78 (men's track & field, football), Alicia LaValley Wentworth '93 (women's basketball), David Mayer '71 (men's golf), J. Todd Wright '92 (men's basketball) and Peter Luguri, '73, athletic administrator.
The 2007 Class brings to 67 the number of inductees since the Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame established in 1984 to honor the accomplishments of former student-athletes as well as services and contributions of administrators, coaches and friends to Plattsburgh State Athletics.
Officially inducted on Friday, Oct. 12, in the Warren Ballrooms of the Angell College Center during the College's Homecoming week were...
Duran served two of his four years with the men's hockey team as team captain. He compiled 55 goals and 77 assists for 132 points from 1988 to 1992. He had his best season as a senior when he scored 24 goals and 61 points, earning second-team all-State University of New York Athletic Conference, Cardinal co-Most Valuable Player and Plattsburgh State Male Athlete of the Year accolades.
Duran also received a team award that "most typifies a true Cardinal hockey player" in 1992. He helped the Cardinals to a 93-24-7 record and a .778 winning percentage during that time. He played on the school's first NCAA Division III championship team in 1992 and was a two-time SUNYAC champion (1990, '92).
Gadley participated in track and field from 1974-78 and football in 1977. He earned his fame in the former
sport, establishing a school record in the outdoor decathlon with 6,557 points in 1977. One of the oldest benchmarks in PSUC annals, that record stood for 30 years until John Daly broke it last spring at the NCAA Championships.
Gadley was a three-time NCAA qualifier in his event, including an 11th-place national finish in 1977. He also excelled at the international level as he was a brakeman in the four-man bobsled at the 1980 Lake Placid Games, becoming the first-ever black male athlete (along with Willie Davenport) to compete in the Winter Olympics. The team ended up 12th, but set two American records during qualifying runs.
LaValley starred for the Cardinals' women's basketball program from 1989-93. She joins fellow 2004 Hall of Famer Donna Dixon '89 as the only Cardinals who have earned all-SUNYAC accolades four times, including spots on the first team in 1991 and '92. She is still the school's all-time leader in scoring (1,436 points) and steals (408) and also ranks in the Top 10 career lists for 3-point field goals (2nd, 96), assists (4th, 228) and rebounds (10th, 391).
LaValley was named the 1993 Plattsburgh State Female Athlete of the Year after she averaged 16.3 points and set a school single-season record with 149 steals. She is the program's 12th individual enshrined into the Hall.
Mayer qualified three times for the NCAA Golf Championships in 1968 and 1970-71 and the 1967 Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships. He led the team with an 83.1 stroke average during his sophomore year. He helped the Cardinals capture back-to-back NAIA District 31 titles in 1970-71 and the 1971 SUNYAC championship.
As a junior, Mayer was the co-medalist of NAIA District 31 when the team won its first district crown. He was a three-time team MVP and captain in 1970.
Wright is one of only 11 1,000-point scorers in the 86-year history of the men's basketball program, listing second with 1,267 from 1988-92. He was a three-time all-SUNYAC choice, including First Team honors in 1990 and '91, and an Eastern Basketball Division III All-Star in 1991. He was voted the team MVP for his last three years.
Currently the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of First Year Experience and Retention Efforts, Luguri began his professional career at Plattsburgh State in 1979 when he started the Upward Bound program. He also worked as assistant provost and taught classes, but he's probably best known in Plattsburgh circles as being the athletics director for 17 years during two different stints (1987-97 and 1998-2004).
During his tenure operating the athletics department, Luguri saw the Cardinals claim two NCAA Division III men's ice hockey titles and one NCAA Regional as well as ECAC, SUNYAC and New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association championships in men's/women's soccer, men's/women's cross country and men's basketball.
Luguri was the SUNYAC President in 1994-95 and 2002-03, the Chair of the Men's Sports Committee in 1991-92 and 1992-93, and the Chair of the Finance Committee in 1993-94. He was also a member of the Chancellor's SUNY-Wide Task Force on Student Life in 1993-94. In May, he received the Dr. Patrick R. Damore Distinguished Service Award from the SUNYAC.
2006 Class Inducted into Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame
On Oct. 20, 2006, the Plattsburgh State Sports Hall of Fame grew to 61 members with the induction of Gary Butler '64 (pictured far right), T.J. Cornwright Brock '89 and Gaetan D'Anjou '82 (middle) as the Hall's newest members. The ceremonies were held in the Warren Ballrooms of the Angell College Center. The Hall was established in 1984 to honor the accomplishments of former student-athletes and services and contributions of administrators, coaches and friends to the Plattsburgh State Athletics Dept.
Butler was a three-year starter for the Cardinal baseball team from 1962 to 1964 and played soccer
during the 1962 and '63 seasons. Named to the 1963 all-State University of New York Athletic Conference baseball team as a junior, Butler was also the Cardinals' team MVP and senior captain a year later. Butler also is among the leaders in several Plattsburgh all-time charts: first with 60 strikeouts in a season (1962), first with 162 career strikeouts, eighth with 22 career appearances and 10th in career winning percentage.
"Gary was the mainstay of our pitching staff for three seasons, and also was a two-year starter for the soccer team," wrote former Plattsburgh State administrator and coach Dr. Ernie Rangazas, who passed away in January, in a letter to the Hall of Fame Selection Committee on behalf of Butler's nomination. "After his Plattsburgh State graduation, he was an effective member of the faculty at Beekmantown Central School, where he also became a successful baseball coach by leading the Eagles to over 300 wins during his tenure."
A retired teacher and guidance counselor from Beekmantown, Butler now works as a licensed real estate agent and is a volunteer baseball assistant coach at Plattsburgh State. He also has served as a professional Major League Baseball scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Montreal Expos organizations for over 20 years.
Brock was a four-year basketball standout for Cardinal teams in the mid-to-late 1980s. A three-time all- SUNYAC performer, she still holds the school single-game scoring record with 36 points as a freshman against Binghamton on Feb. 8, 1986. Brock also is among all-time leaders in several Plattsburgh all-time charts: second in career rebounds with 674, second in season field goal percentage at 54.0 percent in 1986, second in season rebounding average at 11.0 per game in 1989, fourth in season field goals made with 149 in 1986, sixth in career points with 1,000 and seventh in career steals with 134, just to name a few of her marks.
Fellow Hall of Famer and Brock's former coach Phoebe Sturm said: "T.J. was an absolute pleasure to work with. She was mature even as a freshman and was eager to learn and lead. She was respected by her peers and never let them down. She was just fun to be around."
The former Cornwright is taking a break from the nursing field to care for her two children. She and her husband make their home in Saratoga.
D'Anjou was a standout for the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team from 1979-82, helping the squad
to a 74-26-6 overall record and .726 winning percentage during that span. He racked up 95 goals (T-5th), including 23 on the power-play (9th) and 181 points (9th)--all school records when he finished his collegiate career.
"'Gates' was known as an explosive skater with finesse-type skills as a centerman. He was one of our key players during my tenure," said former Plattsburgh coach Herb Hammond, who served here from 1980-82.
The product of Noranda, Quebec, had his best season during the 1981-82 campaign when he received first-team All-America laurels after scoring a school-record 50 goals and 91 points. The Cardinals won the SUNYAC title and advanced to the NCAA Division II championship game.
In fact, his offensive outputs of 50 goals and 91 points are fifth and ninth, respectively, in Division III history for a single season.
In the season before, D'Anjou helped a Plattsburgh squad then went 27-4-2 (then a school record for season victories) and earned a NCAA II championship game berth in its first national tournament appearance.
His collegiate trophycase includes two-time first-team all-SUNYAC, first-team ECAC West All-Star in 1981, two-time ECAC II West All-Star and 1981 MVP of NYCHA All-Star First Team.
D'Anjou manages a family business in northern Quebec, Canada.
