Men are Hamilton Invitational Runners-Up

CLINTON, N.Y. -  The Plattsburgh State men's cross country team finished in second place at the Hamilton Invitational on Saturday at the Continentals College Golf Course, trailing only Queen's University (Calif.) by 14 points, 41 to 55.  COMPLETE MEET RESULTS

The Cardinals had a pair of Top 10 runners including Mike Heymann, who was second overall in 26 minutes and 26.7 seconds, and Alex Sico, who was ninth in 27:10.9.  Three more scorers ended up in the Top 20:  Paul Allison (13th, 27:22.9), Ben Jackson (14th, 27:27.2) and Bobby Grimm (17th, 27:29.6).

In addition, Jack Swartz (27th overall, 27:56.1) and Joe Ver (28th, 27:58.0) rounded out the Cardinals performance but they didn't figure into the team's point totals.

"It was a great day for us. We were able to place really well (and we were still) holding back a little," Plattsburgh coach John Lynch said after the 10-team meet, which was an 8-kilometer affair.  "Our top guys did not run hard until the last 2 miles of the race and we still ran some pretty decent times. I decided on this strategy at this meet because we are satisfied with our progress at this point in the season, and we are focusing on staying healthy and training hard to make a big jump up the regional rankings at the end of October and early November in order to get into the NCAA's.

"There were breakthrough races from Jack (Swartz) and Matt Burton as they both posted season bests on a very difficult course.  We rested our second guy in Seth Yernye, but he will be back racing (next weekend)."

Hamilton's Peter Kosgei won the individual title in 24:39.9.

Heymann, of Tully (N.Y.) High School, finished first overall in last Saturday's Geneseo Invitational with a time of 25 minutes and 24 seconds on the 8-kilometer course. He led Plattsburgh to a second place team showing behind the nationally ranked Blue Knights.

MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y. - Sophomore Mike Heymann won Saturday's Geneseo Invitational at Letchworth State Park, leading the Plattsburgh State men's cross country team to a second place finish in the 21-team field.  Heymann, who has earned three wins in five races this season, navigated the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes and 24 seconds.  COMPLETE MEET RESULTS

The host Blue Knights, who are ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III coaches poll, scored 36 points to beat Plattsburgh's 91.

In addition to Heymann, sophomore Seth Yernye (17th overall, 26:21), junior Ben Jackson (20th, 26:26), junior Alex Sico (22nd, 26:33) and freshman Noel Lomax (40th, 26:57) scored for the Cardinals.  Sophomore Bobby Grimm (49th, 27:09) and senior Joe Ver (54th, 27:17) also placed but didn't figure into the team scoring.

"We were without our No. 2 runner in Paul Allison and our top 7 in Matt Medeiros due to sickness," said Plattsburgh coach John Lynch. "(But) Noel Lomax stepped up to fill in for the missing guys, moving up the ladder from outside the top 7 last weekend to being the fifth man today and also running over a minute faster. Ben Jackson, who was our fifth man last weekend, was our third today and running 30 seconds faster.

"It is nice to know that we have such a deep team that we can rest certain individuals and still be successful as a team."

Cardinals Put Scare into Nationally Ranked SLU

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.  -  Led by sophomore Mike Heymann's first-place finish, the unranked Plattsburgh State men's cross country team nearly upset Saint Lawrence (No. 33 in USTFCCA coaches poll) on Saturday in the Battle of the North Country meet at Field House Rugar Woods.  The Saints edged the host Cardinals by nine points, 24 to 33, and SUNY-Canton (85) came in third.  Heymann (pictured, left) covered the 5-kilometer course in record time at 15 minutes and 34 seconds, breaking the previous Rugar Woods benchmark set last year by Eric Donahoe of SLU.

"I am very happy with our guys.  Mike Heymann led the pack with a course-record performance, beating the mark of 2007 when the previous holder placed fourth at the NCAA's last fall," Plattsburgh coach John Lynch said.  "Our awesome pack of guys led by Paul Allison and Alex Sico almost closed the door on SLU in the last 400 meters. Coach's Corner

Men's Cross Country Coach John Lynch notes:

"Plattsburgh State Cross Country and hard work go hand-in-hand. The student-athletes here at Plattsburgh are dedicated to the classroom as well as making themselves better runners. The commitment by the distance runners has led to many high performances, both academically and athletically. The cross country teams consistently raise the bar of success each year and take advantage of each opportunity to perform at a high level. Freshmen and newcomers improve through consistently applying a high effort. Plattsburgh State is a program that looks at the long-term goals for all of its student-athletes."

Soaring to New Heights

The Plattsburgh State men's cross country program continues to be a place where student-athletes reach amazing new heights. Since 1990, 28 Cardinal runners have broken the 27-minute mark in 8k competition, with 13 sub-26-minute performances and a team-best 24:08 mark set in 2000. As a team, the Cardinals last won the State University of New York Athletic Conference championship in 1997 and has sent several individuals to the NCAA Championships, including Matt DeShane from 2003 to 2005. Nineteen Cardinals have earned SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame status and five have received the highest honor in our sport--All-America status--with DeShane tabbed in 2005 and '06.

The men's cross country team, like all intercollegiate athletics teams at Plattsburgh State, focuses on a commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement and community service.
