Plattsburgh Rolls ACP to Earn Cardinal Classic Championship Berth
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Taylor Amarando posted game highs of 26 points for a career best and 11 rebounds to lead a balanced Plattsburgh State offense as the Cardinals crushed Albany College of Pharmacy, 92-59, on Friday at Memorial Hall. Plattsburgh (1-1 overall) advances to Saturday's championship game (2 p.m.) of its own Cardinal Classic against the winner of tonight's other semifinal between Castleton State and Baruch.
The Cardinals surpassed the 90-point mark for the first time since a 96-54 victory against Potsdam on Nov. 22, 2002, in the Cardinal Classic Semifinals.
Besides Amarando, Molly Harte with 15 points, Catherine Cassidy, 14; Lyndsey Moore, 12; and Lindsey Larivee, 10, also notched double figures. Cassidy also dished a career-high 11 assists for an efficient offense that recorded 26 assists on 36 field goals as a team.
The Panthers (1-3 overall) had four scorers in double digits--Alex Oaks, Katie McCormack and Kelly VanValkenburgh with 13 each, and Kimberly Ray, 10--but the team shot only 32.9 percent from the field (23-70) and had more turnovers (29) than field goals (23).
Plattsburgh used a full-court press to race to a 50-23 halftime lead, translating to easy baskets and a 62.5 field goal percentage (20-32). The team finished the game by making 50 percent of its shots from the floor (36-72).
Stephanie McCoy--the only Plattsburgh starter not to score in double digits with seven points--had three steals along with Caitlin O'Keefe to spark the Cardinals' suffocating defense that generated 13.
Plattsburgh had a slight rebounding edge, 41-38, but ACP controlled the offensive glass, 16 to 14. Harte had seven rebounds for Plattsburgh, and Cassidy and O'Keefe six each, to support Amarando on the boards. McCormack and VanValkenburgh pulled down eight apiece.

Cardinal Women Rally, But Fall Short at Norwich
NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Down 36-30 after the first half, the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team rallied back against host Norwich and scored 44 points in the second, but still fell just short of a victory. The Cardinals fell to the Cadets by a score of 75-74. Plattsburgh now stands 0-1 for the season, while Norwich holds a record of 1-0.
Though trailing for the majority of the game, the Cardinals posted their highest lead of the day just over 10 minutes into the first half when Ashley Gyscek tossed up a layup off an assist from Molly Harte to place Plattsburgh ahead by four. Norwich's Kylie Cowens answered back with a jumper from the paint, but Taylor Amarando quickly sank an unassisted jumper with 9:02 left to play in the first to keep the Cardinals ahead. Unfortunately, a foul by Plattsburgh's Stephanie McCoy would give Cowens the opportunity to sink two free throws and the Cadets would soon after take back the lead.
With under a minute left on the clock and Norwich leading, 71-64, Plattsburgh did its best to rally with a couple of three-pointers in the final seconds. After a three-pointer from Lyndsey Moore trimmed the Cadets’ lead to 75-74, the Cardinals stole the ensuing inbounds pass with 2.4 seconds left. Plattsburgh called for a timeout, but once the clock started again the Cardinals were unable to get off a decent shot and Norwich survived.
Amarando topped the Plattsburgh squad with 14 points during the contest, while Moore posted 13. All of Moore's points came during the second half, including a 3-for-5 mark from the arc. Amarando and Harte led the team with eight rebounds apiece, while Catherine Cassidy added seven assists and three steals to the effort.
For Norwich, Jess Jaggers posted a double-double with a game-high 17 points and 12 boards. Natalie Marchese dished out four assists for the Cadets, and Tara Stevenson added two blocks. Ally Daniels and Erica Rate each nabbed two steals.
All together, the Cardinals 43.5% (30-69) from the floor during the contest and 57.1% (8-14) from the free-throw line. Norwich recorded a field goal percentage of .426 (23-54) and shot .735 (25-34) from the line.
Next up, Plattsburgh will host its annual Cardinal Classic this Friday and Saturday. The action begins at 5 p.m. on Friday when the Cardinals take on Albany College of Pharmacy, followed by Baruch versus Castleton State at 7 p.m.

Coach's Corner
Cheryl Cole, Women's Basketball Coach
"We want student-athletes who are willing to challenge themselves and their teammates on the court and in the classroom. Academic success is our #1 priority and our team grade-point average is consistently above the general student population.
"We are actively involved in various community service projects throughout the season including the American Heart Walk, reading programs, Adopt-A-Friend, and role modeling programs. As a top spectator sport within our community, women's basketball draws comprehensive media coverage, including feature articles and highlights on the local NBC affiliate's newscasts. For the basketball player looking for a rewarding challenge academically and athletically, Plattsburgh State is an excellent choice." Learn more about Coach Cheryl Cole.
A Growing Regional Power
The women's basketball team has steadily grown into a conference and regional power, setting a new standard of excellence as recently as 2002 with a team-record 16 wins. The Car dinals play an exciting brand of basketball, mixing up-tempo transition play with an emphasis on solid defense and ball control. The team carries a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 15 players who compete in 25 regular season games leading into post-season.
Plattsburgh State annually hosts the Cardinal Classic, one of the top season-opening tournaments in the state. The team has come to not only expect post-season play, but to advance and has an eye on the coveted conference championship. The Cardinals compete in one of the top athletic conferences in the nation, the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC ), and the conference champion gains automatic entry into the NCAA Championship Tournament.
The women's basketball team, like all intercollegiate athletics teams at Plattsburgh State, focuses on a commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement, and community service.
