Host Fredonia be-Devils Cardinals in Comeback Win

FREDONIA, N.Y. -  The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team took a 41-32 halftime lead into the locker room on Friday night at Fredonia, but couldn't sustain that momentum in the second half as the Blue Devils came from behind to win, 66-59, at Steele Hall.  The Cardinals fall to 3-8 overall, including 1-2 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference.  The Blue Devils improve to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

The Cardinals came out firing in the first 20 minutes by making 57.7 percent of their field goal attempts (15-26) to gain a 9-point cushion at the break, leading by as many as 12 in the first half.  But the tables were turned in the second half as the Blue Devils' defense stepped up, limiting Plattsburgh to 27.3 percent from the floor (6-22) while converting at a 52.4 clip.

Bryant made a lay-in to key a 12-2 run to start the second half as Fredonia would take a 44-43 lead with 13 minutes and 38 second left.

The teams traded points over the next 10 minutes, with neither team taking more than four-point lead and featuring six ties.  Wayne Davis' 3-pointer broke a 57-57 tie with 3:44 to play, and the Blue Devils scored their final six points at the free throw line to complete the comeback win.

Cardinals Nipped by Panthers at Home

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -   Errol Daniyan pumped in a career-high 29 points and completed a double-double with 15 rebounds, both game bests, but it wasn't enough as the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team lost 68-64 at the hands of visiting Middlebury in non-conference action Tuesday at Memorial Hall.  The Cardinals fall to 3-7 while the Panthers, who are receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, improve to 10-2.

On Plattsburgh's ensuing possession, head coach Tom Curle was whistled for a technical foul 21 seconds later and Ben Rudin made 1 of 2 free throws to give the visitors some breathing room.  Plattsburgh still had a chance to tie the game, but a 3-pointer glanced off the rim.

Ruiz Explodes for 41 in Plattsburgh OT Win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -  Sophomore guard Chris Ruiz proved why he's the reigning men's basketball player of the week in the State University of New York Athletic Conference on Friday night.  Ruiz poured-in a career- and conference-high 41 points in Plattsburgh State's 99-92 victory in overtime over the visiting College of Brockport at Memorial Hall.  After the SUNYAC opener for both teams, the Cardinals are 3-3 overall while the Golden Eagles are 1-3.

Ruiz made 14 of 26 field goals and 10 of 13 free throws, plus he had 12 rebounds to complete a double-double.  Brad Mader came off the bench and also posted a double-double with 13 points and game-best 14 rebounds, and Danny Tangney and Errol Daniyan each chipped in 14 points.

Mychal Wilkes paced four Golden Eagles in double figures with 21 points, followed by Joel Almeida with 20, Eamon Kays had 15 and Joe Clarke scored 13.

With the score tied at 83, Ian Mack had a chance to win it for Brockport in regulation but his driving lay-in glanced off the rim with 2 seconds left and Daniyan grabbed the defensive rebound as time expired.  Almeida nailed one of his four 3-pointers to send the game into the 5-minute extra session.

Plattsburgh led by as many as 12 points in the first half and eight in the second half.  It's poor performance from the free throw line--a 51.5 clip on 17 of 33 attempts--helped keep the Golden Eagles in the game.

However, the Cardinals made their foul shots count in the overtime when they converted 10 of 14 for 71.4 percent to extend their SUNYAC winning streak to 18 games dating to the 2006-07 season.

Cardinals Get Bested by SLU on the Road

CANTON, N.Y. -  The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team dropped its third game of the season on Tuesday to the St. Lawrence University Saints by a score of 82-71. The Cardinals now stand at 2-3 on the year, falling below .500 for the first time in two years and losing back-to-back games for the first time since Dec. 19 and Jan. 4 of last season.

Chris Ruiz came back late in the first half to sink two shots from the field for Plattsburgh, but the team fell just short of taking the lead going into the break. The teams retreated to their locker rooms with the Saints ahead 35-34.

The second half saw St. Lawrence pull even farther ahead, with Saints' guard Tom Wopperer netting 21 points alone. Wopperer also posted his 1,000th-career point during the evening.

Offensively for the Cardinals, Ruiz led the team with 22 points and three steals. Brad Mader and Lance Darrell also posted double digits for Plattsburgh, scoring 14 and 12 points respectively. Errol Daniyan topped the defense with 15 rebounds, while Ketema Brooks contributed five assists to the squad's effort.

Plattsburgh returns home on Friday to open up the team's State University of New York Athletic Conference play against Brockport at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

Cardinals Receive Votes in National Preseason Poll

MINNEAPOLIS -  The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team is one of four State University of New York Athletic Conference programs recently recognized in the D3hoops.com Top 25 preseason poll.

Click here for complete preseason poll by D3hoops.com

Despite losing all five starters off last year's team that won their third straight SUNYAC championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sectional Semifinals, the Cardinals are still highly regarded by the nation's voters due to a talented recruiting class and eight returners who helped the team to a 27-3 record (16-0 in SUNYAC).  Included in the "others receiving votes" category, Plattsburgh received eight points to rank T-46th if the poll was extrapolated beyond the Top 25.

Six-foot-4 sophomore guard Chris Ruiz is Plattsburgh's top returning scorer at 6.7 points per game, followed by 6-6 sophomore forward Errol Daniyan at 6.5.

Plattsburgh opens the 2008-09 season at home with the revival of the Cardinal Classic on Nov. 15-16, which includes Paul Smith's, Westfield State and Johnson State.

Cortland State (14), Brockport State (1) and Geneseo State (1) were the other SUNYAC schools to receive D3Hoops.com poll votes, with points noted in parentheses.

The D3hoops.com Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country, and is published weekly.

With one starter graduating and another returning from a season lost to injury, 2008 Division III national champion Washington University is the overwhelming choice as the No. 1 team by D3hoops.com.
