SUNY Plattsburgh Branch Campus at Queensbury Undergraduate Admissions Requirements

For admission to any of the four programs offered through SUNY Plattsburgh at Queensbury, students must have already earned an Associate's Degree, or the equivalent of approximately 60 credits. The recommended GPA for most programs is a 2.30, though the Childhood Education Program requires at least a 2.75 GPA to be considered.

When choosing courses to prepare for these programs, students should focus on completing as many of the SUNY General Education requirements as possible.

Programmatic Requirements

Childhood Education Major

Unlike the other programs, the Childhood Education program only admits to the fall semester and is capped at approximately 25 new students each year. Admission is competitive and preference is given to those applicants with the highest GPA and the most prerequisites completed.

We recommend that Branch Campus students complete one of the following academic concentrations: English, Mathematics, or Social Studies

English Concentration:
Students choosing the English concentration should focus on literature courses, rather than writing courses. We recommend the following courses:

• American Literature I
• American Literature II
• Children's Literature
• Intro to Literature
• Intro to Poetry or Intro to Fiction
• Science Fiction/Fantasy
• World Literature I or II

Mathematics Concentration:
Students choosing the Mathematics concentration should focus on the following courses:

• Calculus I
• Finite Math
• Geometry
• Math for Elementary Teachers (If two sections are available, take both)
• Precalculus
• Statistics

The following courses are also recommended:

• Calculus II
• Linear Algebra
• Higher-level Mathematics Courses (by advisement)

Social Studies Concentration:
Students choosing the Social Studies Concentration should focus on the following courses:

• Geography Courses (Global or Human or Physical Geography is Recommended)
• History Course (American or Western Civilization)
• Political Science Course
• Anthropology Course (Cultural Anthropology is Recommended)
• Economics Course (A Principles of Economics course is Recommended)
• Intro to Psychology
• Intro to Sociology

In addition, we recommend that students choose one of these two groups:

1. Psychology Focus (Choose up to 3 Courses):
   • Abnormal Psychology
   • Adolescence Psychology
   • Child Psychology
   • Developmental Psychology
   • Personality
2. Sociology Focus (Choose up to 3 Courses):
   • Sociology of the Family
   • Juvenile Delinquency
   • Sociology of Aging
   • Sociology of Women
   • Sociology of Health and Medicine
   • Sociology of Minorities

Criminal Justice Major

The Criminal Justice Program is looking for students who have completed a two-year degree in Criminal Justice, or its equivalent.  At minimum, the program is looking for students to have completed:

• Intro to Criminal Justice
• Criminology
• Intro to Psychology
• Intro to Sociology

The following courses are also recommended:

• Abnormal Psychology or Developmental Psychology or Personality
• American Government
• Criminal Investigation
• Juvenile Delinquency or Social Problems
• Statistics

Business Administration Major

Students looking to complete the Business Administration Program at SUNY Plattsburgh at Queensbury should complete a Business AS Transfer Degree, or its equivalent. The courses that should be completed include:

• Macroeconomics
• Managerial Accounting
• Microeconomics

• Principles of Marketing

Psychology Major

To gain admission to the Psychology program, students must have at least four Psychology courses completed.

• General Psychology ("C" grade or higher)
• Developmental Psychology
• Personality

At least one of the following courses:

• Abnormal Psychology
• Adolescence Psychology
• Child Psychology
• Social Psychology (if offered as a Psychology course)
