Graduate Assistantship in Counselor Education
This position is filled for the 2013-2014 academic year.
The Counselor Education Department graduate assistant is responsible for assisting the Department Chairperson with research and report-writing activities vital to the ongoing accreditation of our three graduate programs, assists the Director of the Counseling Services Clinic in overseeing the professional operations of the clinic, and provides professional representation of the departmental policies and procedures to prospective and current students, site supervisors, employers, and the campus and general public. This position provides a full tuition scholarship (in-state rate) and a stipend of $5,320 for the 2013-2014 academic year. The graduate assistant is expected to work 20 hours a week during the semester, for a total of 600 hours during the academic year.
Educational Value to Student:
The Counselor Education Department graduate assistantship consists of activities equivalent to those expected of professional counselors in settings where graduates of any of our three programs might be found — schools, colleges, or community mental health organizations. Accountability, communication, and development of professional relationships with all constituencies — the responsibilities of the person in this position — are all essential competencies of professional counselors.
Major Responsibilities:
- Develop data collection instruments, collect, and analyze data for annual and mid-cycle reports to accrediting organization, including alumni surveys, surveys of employers and site supervisors, internship data, and enrollment statistics.
- Assist in written preparation of ongoing accreditation reports and program self-studies.
- Oversee professional functioning of Counseling Services Clinic, under the supervision of the clinic director.
- Prepare presentation materials and provide professional representation of department and programs to the public and prospective and current students at events such as Admissions Day, Internship Mini-Conference, Graduate Studies Open House, Advisement Social, and Counseling Services Clinic.
- Manage departmental communications with current students; hold office hours to serve as additional resource for students regarding program requirements and expectations.
- Assist faculty with preparation of materials for courses, professional conferences, leadership responsibilities in professional organizations, and scholarship efforts.
- Maintain the semester calendar and be responsible for advertising professional events and workshops available to students for professional development.
- Assist the Chairperson and CACREP Liaison in the preparation of the department's self-study report for the new accreditation cycle.
- And other tasks as may be assigned.
Qualifications:
- Matriculation in one of the three programs in the Counselor Education Department - Student Affairs Professional Practice, Mental Health Counseling, or School Counseling.
- Processing skills in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
- Data processing skills.
- Enthusiastic, responsive, responsible.
- Able to produce high quality work with minimal supervision.
- Excellent writing skills.
- Excellent oral communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ACA ethical standards.
- Demonstrates professional comportment and behaviors in interactions with faculty and peers.
- Facility with technology.
