The EOP Admission Process

To apply for EOP admission to SUNY Plattsburgh, candidates should complete the following admissions process:

Step 1: Submit an Application - for Freshman and Transfer Applicants

Prospective freshman and transfer students who wish to apply for EOP admission may do so using either the SUNY Application or Common Application.

Fill out a SUNY Application or Common Application (online recommended) and check the box for the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).
NOTE:  On the Common Application, you will select the EOP box on SUNY Plattsburgh's Supplement to the Common Application.

Students submitting an application for EOP consideration may qualify for an application fee waiver for their first four (4) campus choices. If a student does not meet both the academic and economic guidelines, the student will be billed for the fee.  Applicants who are deemed ineligible for EOP may still qualify for admission and financial aid through other admissions processes.

Students applying for EOP will need to submit the following additional items:

  • Official High School Transcript or SOAR (for freshmen or transfers with less than 24 credits)
  • SAT/ACT Scores (for freshmen or transfers with less than 24 credits)
  • Official College Transcript(s) (if applying as a transfer student)
  • Letter of Recommendation

NOTE:  Students applying through the SUNY Application will need to submit the following additional items:

  • SUNY Common Supplemental (for freshman applicants)

Step 2: Admissions Review (Admissions) - for Freshman and Transfer Applicants

After filing your application, your application will first be processed and reviewed by the Admissions Office for academic eligibility.

At this stage, transfer applicants will also be required to submit EOP Transfer Eligibility Verification to the Admissions Office.  Once this information is received, and you meet the transfer admission requirements, your application will be reviewed for EOP eligibility and a decision will be sent to you via mail.  For more details, visit the following links:

Step 3: Submit Statement of Family Income (SOFI) - for Freshman Applicants

Freshman applicants who meet the academic eligibility guidelines for EOP will be sent a request to submit a Statement of Family Income (SOFI), which will ask you to complete a detailed account of your household finances and background.  It will also ask you to complete autobiographical statements.  You are strongly encouraged to complete the SOFI online through your MyPlattsburgh account.  If you are unable to complete the SOFI online, please call the EOP Office at 518-564-2263.  You will receive notification by letter and e-mail once the SOFI is available for you to complete in your MyPlattsburgh account.  You must first complete your Admissions application and be deemed academically eligible for EOP before you can fill out the SOFI.

In addition to completion of the SOFI, applicants must submit verifying income documentation (i.e. federal income tax returns, W-2’s, agency statements, etc.), and a completed copy of the FAFSA, before a final admissions decision can be made. Financial documentation will be requested based on the responses you provide on the SOFI. The FAFSA may be completed online starting January 1. To learn more about completing the FAFSA, visit here

PLEASE NOTE: If you are accepted to EOP, and it is later determined that the information you provided on the SOFI was falsified, incomplete, or altered to present yourself as being academically and/or economically disadvantaged, you will forfeit your participation in the Educational Opportunity Program and be responsible for reimbursing SUNY Plattsburgh for any funds expended on your behalf.

Step 4: Submit Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) - for Freshman and Transfer Applicants

Complete and file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) listing SUNY Plattsburgh (code 002849) as a recipient. Also complete the TAP application online.  Complete and file the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1, providing information for the previous year (for example, 2011 information for those applying for admission in 2012).  Learn more about applying for FAFSA and TAP.

Step 5: Financial Review (Financial Aid) - for Freshman Applicants

You will need to provide documentation of both taxable and non-taxable income for yourself and your parents/household.  This documentation will be requested based on the information you provide on the SOFI.  Promptly respond to all requests for information in order to expedite the review of your application for EOP.

Step 6: EOP Review

Once your EOP application is considered complete and ready for review, a decision will be sent to you by mail.  You can also continue to check your application status and requests for missing items online through your MyPlattsburgh account.
