About SUNY Study Abroad
Through SUNY, our students are able to study abroad in over 400 programs in over sixty countries. The possibilities are many, and the programs are all very different. The number of SUNY Plattsburgh students who study abroad has been steadily increasing over the past few years, and our students are going all over the world! We hope that this page will help you a little, but also remember that you can always call us at 564-2321 or stop by 102 Broad St. for more information!
To Where Do I Refer Students Wanting Information on Study Abroad?
If you are an advisor, then you have had or will have students ask you about studying abroad. The most important piece of advice that you can give them is to plan early! Next, make sure that you stress all of the programs SUNY offers. Our students are in no way limited to participating in SUNY Plattsburgh programs only. In fact, we encourage you to take a few minutes to view the complete list of SUNY Study Abroad Programs. Last, instruct them to stop by the Global Education Office for advising. We will help them narrow down programs that fit their needs and interest, and will explain the nuts and bolts of registration, financial aid, and costs.
What Do I Have To Do?
If you are an advisor and/or department chair, then you will work with the students to evaluate the courses they will be taking abroad. Prior to departure, students must submit a Permission for Off-Campus Study Form, which we give them in their acceptance packets. We tell the students to bring this form to their advisors first and then to their department chairs along with a list of courses at their host institution they want to take along with course descriptions. (We suggest they have a list of eight courses in case they add/drop or can't get into a course once in country.) If you are the advisor, then you indicate on the form the requirement that the course abroad should full fill. Then your chair must review your assessment and sign for final approval.
Financial Aid staff must also sign this form. When the students visit you, they are instructed to bring along the Study Abroad Budget we send them in their acceptance packets, a document the Global Education Office produces outlining major program costs.
Can I Take Students Abroad, or Suggest a Program?
Several faculty and staff members lead groups of students abroad for short periods of time each year. Leading such a program requires extra work and assumes some liability; however, the faculty and staff who have led these programs find them very rewarding. There's no 'cookie cutter' to help you design a program, but there are some general procedures and the Global Education Office can help you find contacts to help you with the travel logistics. If you are interested, please call the GEO Office at 564-2321 to make an appointment to discuss leading a short term program!
Or, if you want to suggest a program, please call us as well. There is an approval process, but we are always looking for new contacts and partners!
Where Can I Find More Information
Please stop by to visit us or call 564-2321 the GEO Office. We have print materials for all of our programs, and can show you how to look up other SUNY programs. We also do study abroad presentations for faculty and staff meetings, which many departments and offices find very helpful!!
