About the Music Program

Getting Involved In Music at Plattsburgh State

Opportunities abound for you, regardless of your academic major - all you need is an interest in music at Plattsburgh.

Music Opportunities for Everyone

  • Students with prior experience in music may perform in one of eleven Performing Ensembles and may audition for private music lessons.
  • Those with no prior performing experience may elect class instruction in piano, voice, or guitar.
  • All classroom courses are open to the entire campus population.
  • We offer classes in music history, theory, jazz studies, and music technology. Several of these classes fulfill General Education requirements.

Academic Programs In Music

For those students interesting in pursuing music in more depth, the Music Department offers three programs of study:

Note: Each option requires an audition for formal acceptance into that music program.

A Broad Variety of Coursework

The coursework for each of these options includes classroom courses in music theory, history, jazz, and music technology, as well as performing ensembles and individual applied music lessons.

We also offer Heisler Music Scholarships for students who exhibit strong performance skills and the potential to contribute to the Music Department.
