Adolescence Education Program at SUNY Plattsburgh

Teachers for grades 7-12 face special challenges in preparing adolescents for life in the 21st century.

Plattsburgh State offers focused adolescence education programs in biology, chemistry, earth science, English, French, mathematics, physics, social studies, and Spanish. Teacher education candidates in these areas benefit from the guidance of two advisors - one in the Department of Adolescence Education and one in their liberal arts concentration.

Candidates in the combined Bachelors and Master's degree program complete a content-area major in one of the disciplines in which certification is offered and then complete a three-semester sequence of education courses in preparation for teacher certification and the Master's degree.

A Master of Science for Teachers (M.S.T.) degree program for those who have already earned a Bachelor's degree in one of the content areas in which certification is offered is also available. This degree program leads to initial teacher certification.

The traditional Adolescence Education Bachelors of Science program is continued only for those students who are currently enrolled.

Adolescence Education Mission Statement

The mission of Adolescence Education, guided by the mission of the Education Unit, is to foster an environment for teacher education candidates to develop educational philosophies within the context of a dynamic sociocultural and political environment. The program is dedicated to providing teacher candidates with the specialized knowledge, skills and dispositions essential to meeting the education needs of middle and high school students in today's schools. Further, the program is structured to foster the understanding of the interrelationship between academic content, pedagogical application, and continued learning as essential to excellence in teaching. The Adolescence Education Program aspires to prepare candidates who are competent, confident and excited to be an integral part of the educational process.
