About Ecology

What is Ecology?

Ecology comes from the greek word oikos, meaning "house or place we live" and logos, "the study of." It is the scientific study of the interactions between organisms and their environment and addresses many of the following topics:

• The distribution and abundance of organisms.
• How living things interact with each other and their environment.
• The fluxes of matter and energy through the living world.

Ecology encompasses the full set of relationships between organisms and their environment, for example:

• The ecology of the Adirondack forests, wetlands and rivers.
• The ecology of Lake Champlain.
