On-time Graduate Rates:
Generally individuals are able to complete this program in two years (24 months) if they are registered as full-time students. However, students have 10 years to complete the program from the time that they take their first matriculated course. Of the 8 students who started this program in the spring or fall of 2009, 7 or 88% of the students graduated within two years.

School Counseling

Our School Counseling Master Allows You To:

  • Be eligible for certification as a school counselor for grades pre-K to 12 through the New York State Education Department.
  • Apply both developmental and intervention models to the total development of students as unique individuals within educational settings.
  • Use school-based data to design comprehensive programs to meet school counseling program goals, including action plans for implementation and evaluation.
  • Learn to become a leader in the school and advocate for educational equity for all students.
  • Apply technological resources to enhance counseling and guidance planning, and promote informed academic, career, and personal/social choices.

Master of Science in Education (M.S. Ed.) and Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) in School Counseling

The Certificate of Advanced Study in the school counseling program consists of 60 semester credits and prepares students to work as counselors in school settings. Upon completion of this program, students also receive a Master of Science in Education in School Counseling unless they already hold a similar master's degree. This program satisfies the academic requirements for the New York State Permanent Certificate in School Counseling.

Program Requirements

Program requirements include clinical and specialty courses, as well as the core curriculum. The program can be pursued on a full-time or part-time basis, up to the point of internship when a full-time commitment is generally required. A 600-hour internship in a school setting is required.

Program Prerequisite Curricular Experiences

This program requires the applicant to have twelve undergraduate credits in psychology, human services, education, or closely related areas with specific course work in research, social and cultural foundations, human development across the life span, statistics, and technology. Each program applicant will be evaluated individually to determine which undergraduate course work may be credited toward these prerequisites.

Course Sequence

Upon acceptance into the program, each student is assigned an advisor who guides the student in selecting courses to fit the student's program. Courses in the counseling programs are planned to give a balanced selection of academic and experiential education and to encourage each student to achieve maximum professional competence. Academic and professional development evaluations are made of all students each semester to ensure ongoing professional growth.

1 + 1 Option in Counseling

Complete a Master (M.S.) in Student Affairs Counseling, then apply to school counseling, and upon acceptance, proceed to qualify for a Certification of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) in School Counseling.

This unique Counselor Education Department M.S. to C.A.S. option permits the candidate to qualify for two professional specialties. Upon completion of a Master of Science in Student Affairs Counseling, the student can then become eligible for certification as a New York State School Counselor upon completion of the school counselor program.
