What is the speech and hearing center?

Faculty in the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences of the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh operate the Speech and Hearing Center. The center serves as an academic facility for student clinicians and also provides a community service for persons with communication and hearing disorders.

What services are available?

The center provides a full range of evaluation and treatment services for infants, children, and adults with:

• Speech disorders.
• Voice disorders.
• Stuttering.
• Aphasia.
• Delayed language.
• Hearing loss/deafness.
• Learning disabilities related to communication.
• Auditory and language processing disorders.
• English as a second language.
• Traumatic brain injury.

The center also provides:

• Comprehensive hearing evaluation.
• Hearing aid evaluation, fitting, and dispensing.
• Aural rehabilitation.

Assessment of communication disorders is performed using state-of-the-art equipment and the latest in diagnostic procedures. The center is staffed by certified professionals who supervise student clinicians during the evaluation and treatment of individuals with communication disorders. All supervisors are also licensed by the state of New York.

What about costs?

The center is a non-profit research, service, and training facility and, as such, receives some funding from state appropriations to the college. To provide for proper maintenance of equipment and replacement of consumable items (such as test materials and forms), a fee schedule has been established. The center accepts most major insurance plans and offers a sliding payment scale for those individuals without insurance coverage.

When is the center open?

The center is open between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The center closes for scheduled periods that coincide with the college calendar since it serves as an academic training facility for the college. Summer hours are scheduled for specified periods.

The center is located in the Sibley Hall.

Individuals are seen by appointment only, although inquiries are welcome at any time. All inquiries are held in the strictest confidence.

Individuals may contact the center themselves or may be referred by persons such as physicians, parents, teachers, social workers, psychologists, or other community professionals. An initial appointment may be arranged by writing or making a telephone call to the center at (518) 564-2170, or by visiting the center in person. The center is located in Sibley Hall, room 224, on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus in the city of Plattsburgh. The Sibley building can be found on Rugar Street (between Olivetti and Prospect Avenue) and is situated between the campus dormitory towers and Plattsburgh High School.
