Frequently Asked Questions About Odyssey Program

Can You Explain Odyssey In More Detail?

Answer: Odyssey is an adventure based program for incoming first-year students only. It offers a memorable approach to the transition to college life through group experiences offered in outdoor settings. After New Student Orientation, Odyssey can be the unique next step to becoming part of the SUNY Plattsburgh community. The Odyssey experience includes hiking and climbing in the Adirondack Peaks, spending a day on the College's low ropes course, paddling on Lake Champlain or nearby rivers and lakes and meeting new friends. The new relationships you build in Odyssey will help ease you into your first year as a college student and open your eyes to an experience you'll never forget. You'll also get an introduction to the natural environment of your new backyard.

Do I Need to Have Outdoor Experience?

Answer: Absolutely not! Although participants sometimes bring outdoor experiences to Odyssey, many of the participants are climbing, hiking and paddling for the first time. We provide the training along the way, seek help from those with experience, and create our own adventures! We hope participants are in good physical condition for their own and others' safety, but that's it!

Can I bring electronic equipment on Odyssey?

Answer: The point of Odyssey is to get to know other freshmen students and electronics such as laptops, cell phones, and IPods don’t have a place during Odyssey. You will also be exposing this equipment to potential bad weather and they may be ruined.  It is recommended to leave these in your secured dorm room during Odyssey.

When Can I Move Into My Dorm Room?

Answer: At the end of July you will receive more information and details regarding this. The day Odyssey begins you will receive access to your dorm at check-in. The first portion of that day you will have the opportunity to move your belongings into your dorm room. We encourage you to bring all of your belongings for the fall semester prior to leaving for Odyssey. This allows you to miss the freshmen rush of students moving in the next weekend.
