Expeditionary Studies Minor at SUNY Plattsburgh

Experience the Outdoors in the Classroom

The Expeditionary Studies minor combines traditional courses with the experiential opportunities of our curriculum of over 20 Expeditionary Studies courses. The idea behind the minor is to add historical, cultural, or environmental context to these courses and to promote the thinking necessary for safe and thoughtful management of travel in adventure settings.

The wide range of course selections allows you to shape a curriculum to fit your own interests, making this minor an easy complement to most majors.

In courses such as "The Idea and Culture of the Expedition" (EXP 101) and "Outdoor Living Skills" (EXP 121) you will be introduced to the connection of expeditionary studies to the liberal arts and to outdoor skills, the unifying idea of the minor. You will also select courses from our four outdoor disciplines-rock climbing, ice climbing, backcountry skiing, and sea kayaking.

Adventure Education is its own Adventure

The minor is easy to fit into any schedule.

Courses are offered year-round, including winter and summer sessions, and during the regular semester are offered in a variety of scheduling options.

All adventure courses, the introductory level PED courses and the upper level Expeditionary Studies courses have small class sizes, between four and eight, and provide you with everything you need in the way of equipment with no additional fees.

Fulfilling program requirements is easy, given the wide selection of courses, some of which also fulfill general education requirements.

A Flexible Minor

This minor has attracted students from departments all across campus who have found it a useful adjunct to their studies. Currently, students enrolled in the minor are majors in psychology, criminal justice, environmental science, political science, and history, among others.
