CLEP (College Level Examination Program) at SUNY Plattsburgh

Earn College Credit Quickly and Affordably!

The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) gives you the opportunity to earn college credit. Take one or more of the 33 CLEP subject examinations and earn a qualifying score as determined by the American Council on Education (ACE) or by the institution receiving your score(s). Note: Prior to testing, you should investigate your own institution's acceptance policy and passing score requirements. CLEP exams are computer-based.

Testing Schedule at SUNY Plattsburgh

Important: If you are interested in taking a CLEP exam, we encourage you to register as early as possible and by the registration deadline listed to the right of each exam date below.
Exams are filled on a first come first served basis. Phone our office (518) 564-2080 if you would like to arrange a special date for your class or group (5 or more) to take the CLEP exam at the same time!

* Other select dates during may be reserved to accommodate regional HS groups. Contact us if your area high school classes would like to take CLEP tests for college credit; common examples are French, Spanish, College Composition, Economics, Natural Science, College Mathematics, College Algebra, and Psychology).

** Due to a major windows replacement project in Feinberg Library and the Angell College Center, we are unable to host CLEP exams in our regular facility - Feinberg 129. We have temporarily relocated to Hawkins Hall, lower level, room 053D. Your confirmation letter will reflect this room change. Beginning fall semester, we resume use of Feinberg 129.

Fees and Registration

The SUNY Plattsburgh test center uses a unique registration form. Please download from the link above or contact the Academic Advising Office: (518) 564-2080.

There are 2 separate fees:

  • $65 (US$) Test Administration Fee (payable by money order only to SUNY Plattsburgh).
  • $80 (US$) CLEP Exam Fee (payable by credit card on the day of your exam OR by check or money order with your registration form).

  • Send a completed registration form and a "Test Administration fee" of $65.
  • Test Administrative fee must be paid by money order only to SUNY Plattsburgh.
  • No personal checks, cash, or credit cards. Note: This fee is nonrefundable.
  • Mail the Registration Form with your $65 Test Administration money order to:

The $80 "CLEP Exam fee" may be paid by credit card on the day of your exam (VISA, MASTERCARD, DISCOVER, or AMEX). Corporate credit cards, check or money order (payable to "CLEP") should be mailed with the registration form and separate test administration fee. We're sorry, but CLEP and SUNY Plattsburgh do NOT accept cash.

You may not sit for a CLEP exam until all fees (nonrefundable test administration fee and CLEP test fee) have been paid.

Changes/Cancellation

Registered test takers may change a scheduled exam date only once. This change must take place at least 3 business days before the originally scheduled exam date. Candidates who change a scheduled exam date three or more days prior to the exam date must pay a $20 rescheduling fee (payable by money order only to "SUNY Plattsburgh"). Test candidates who change/cancel fewer than three business days (72 business hours) prior to the exam date, or who do not show for a registered exam, will not be refunded for the test administration fee. If this is your case, you are welcome to register for a CLEP Exam again at a future date, and will be required to pay the test administration fee again.

Please Note:

  • Exams are filled on a first-come first-served basis.
  • Candidates need 2 forms of identification on the day of the exam.
    • The primary form must be a government-issued photo ID with signature, such as a passport, driver's license, state-issued ID card, tribal ID, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship.
    • The secondary form of ID must have a photo or signature, such as a Social Security card, student ID, or employee ID.
    • If you are a minor and/or homeschooled without both required forms of ID, CLEP provides a student ID form that can fulfill either the primary or secondary type of identification. Print the Student ID Form (a .pdf document); the form is valid for one year, must include a recent photo, and requires school district or notary verification.

  • Cell phones and/or beepers are not allowed into the exam room. All CLEP tests take place in Feinberg Library Room 129.
