The Academic Advising Process at SUNY Plattsburgh
Academic advising is an important part of your college experience! Advisors assist you in routine matters such as course selection and understanding academic policies; advisors can also provide expert insight, guidance on opportunities in your major, and mentoring as you start your career.
How to Find Out Who Your Academic Advisor Is
Every matriculated student is assigned an academic advisor in your major. You can find out who your academic advisor is by:
- Accessing the MyPlattsburgh.edu portal
- Clicking on the Student Services tab
- Viewing the Advisors pane toward the lower left of your screen
If you are a new student who does not yet have a NetID for access to our computer system:
- Contact the department chair for your program, OR
- Visit/call the Academic Advising Office, Feinberg 101, 518-564-2080
When to Meet with Your Advisor
It is important to get to know your advisor, and consult with him/her on a regular basis. You should meet with your advisor in the following circumstances:
- During the 2-week designated "Course Advisement Period" (more information below)
- When you are making changes to your current or planned schedule (e.g., after being closed out of a course, wishing to drop a course)
- When you have a question about a degree requirement or college policy
- When you are in academic difficulty or something new is affecting your academic performance
- Before changing majors, transferring to another college, or withdrawing from college
How to Prepare for "Course Advisement"
There is a designated "Course Advisement Period" that falls on the full two weeks after midterm grades are issued. You should visit or phone your advisor's office to learn about their advisement appointment sign up schedule and procedures.
Even though this period lasts two weeks, don't wait until the last day to inquire about an appointment. Schedule early appointments during the course selection period, and be prepared to meet by doing the following:
- Print your CAPP Report and review it for outstanding requirements (Gen Ed and your major/minor);
- Search the Master Schedule of Courses on Banner to find classes that fulfill your requirements;
- Make a tentative schedule of courses for the next semester (complete with CRNs, days, times); and
- Prepare a list of questions or concerns you'd like to talk about -- anything from when a course will be offered next to future career plans.
By doing this preparation in advance, you receive:
- Confirmation on your tentative course selections or advice on the sequential order of courses to take
- An assessment of your progress toward degree completion
- Assistance with examining your academic values, personal interests, and career goals
- Your Registration PIN that you'll need to access "priority registration" on Banner for the next semester!
