Welcome to Academic Advising at SUNY Plattsburgh
Is This You?
- A new Plattsburgh student
- An Undeclared student
- Exploring or changing majors/minors
- Needing an academic policy clarified
- In academic jeopardy or difficulty
- Interested in taking a CLEP test, taking the LSAT, or receiving pre-law advisement
- Wanting help managing your academic and life planning
- In the middle of a personal transition or academic "re-direction"
- A graduating senior wanting a "second opinion" about completing degree requirements
- Troubled with a question and don't know who else to ask!
That's Why We're Here!
The Academic Advising Office is here to help you achieve academic and personal success, stay on track with your degree requirements, and keep you well informed of academic policies that apply to you.
We're busy all year long - orienting new fall and spring students to our academic system, ensuring that each student has a designated advisor, advising undeclared and transitional majors, intervening with those students on academic probation, and answering all students' questions or concerns about the progress they are making toward their undergraduate degrees.
The Academic Advising Office Can Help You in Many Ways
Students visit our office for a wide variety of reasons. Here are just a few:
- Information. Along with your own academic advisor, we can provide you with materials that explain General Education requirements, academic policies, how to view/interpret your CAPP report, how to search for classes, how our advising system works, and when course advisement occurs.
- Course Advisement. Our office is the academic home for Undeclared majors. Professional advisors assist undeclared students with course selection, how to register, and major/career exploration. Even if you have a declared major, but are new to the process of advising, we can furnish you with information to get you headed in the right direction!
- Declaring a Major. Using a simple form from our office, students may change their major, add a second major, add a minor, or simply inquire about major programs. We'll show you what you need to complete and direct you to the appropriate people from whom you need a signature or approval.
- Academic Difficulty. Each semester, our office coordinates the academic progress review to ensure students meet the 2.0 GPA standard and are making satisfactory progress toward their degree. We assist students who are on academic probation as well as those questioning a course or college withdrawal.
- Referrals to Services. Sometimes you need advice or assistance with a matter that affects your academic performance or planning - such as studying abroad, getting prior credit transferred, exploring careers, seeking psychological counseling, documenting a learning disability. While our office does not coordinate these services, we can refer you to experts who do. Peer-to-Peer: "The Academic Advising office advisors are awesome. They took time to really know me, and I have so much appreciation for what they do for students!" ~May '09 Graduate
