Internships

Accounting Internship Program

If an accounting major chooses to do an internship, he/she has many choices. Some are located on campus, others are found within the campus community and others near the students' hometown. We are continuously cultivating new opportunities for our students and strongly encourage them to participate in the internship program. It is our way of stimulating students' interest in enhancing their leadership development, team building skills, and experiential learning while pursuing their undergraduate accounting education at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Accounting students can use their Banner ID and Password to log into the student employment website and view a detailed list of available internships.

Eligibility for internship credit requires a student to have completed at least 57 credit hours and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 and complete the internship application.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program

SUNY Plattsburgh Accounting Students Offer Free Tax Preparation Services Through the IRS' VITA Program

Accounting students at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh are offering free tax preparation as part of a collaborative effort between the College and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The program, best known as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), offers free tax help to low-to moderate-income ($36,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Our student Volunteers receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in the surrounding community. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Plattsburgh students who are not claimed as dependents and who earn $36,000 or below can also take advantage of this free tax preparation. The VITA program is currently in its 3rd year at Plattsburgh and total of seventeen students have participated so far in helping people in the community to file their tax returns electronically and getting the appropriate tax refunds faster

To qualify to be volunteers for the program, SUNY Plattsburgh students must have completed the Income Tax I (ACC 403 ) course and must have either completed or be currently enrolled in Income Tax II (ACC 404 ). In addition, student volunteers must receive VITA training in tax law and electronic filing.

One WorkSource Employment and Training Center located at the former Air Force Base in Plattsburgh has been set up as a VITA site during Spring 2005 tax season.
