- About Plattsburgh
WQKE is officially listed as an adult college alternative music station. The station receives music from both major and independent music labels for up-and-coming artists. As a student run and operated facility, students make all programming decisions — like what music artists to play. The students get to review the material, schedule, play, and chart the progress of the songs they select. Many of the CDs they play arrive 3 to 6 months before they reach commercial outlets — giving WQKE students first exposure to many new musical artists!
WQKE Radio or "The Quake" is the college's student-run and operated, Class D FCC designated on-air broadcast radio facility. The Quake's alternative, college-radio format broadcasts 10,000 milliwatts of power 7 days a week from 10 AM to 2:30 AM daily, to both a campus-wide and a local community audience on 93.9 FM. WQKE also reaches out through the Internet with its music, talk shows, and sports programming.
All students enrolled in classes at SUNY Plattsburgh (who pay Student Association dues) are eligible to be a member of WQKE. WQKE operates with a 20-channel digital radio console and several professional Dennon CD decks. Pre-production elements are assembled in the Quake's own production facility located adjacent to their Master Control Room/MCR (broadcast studios). Students interested in being involved with the station can sign up at their weekly meetings (held on the 2nd floor of the College Center) or simply by dropping by the station and meeting the staff.
WQKE Radio is located in the Angell College Center (near Subway) and is open to all SUNY Plattsburgh students.
