SUNY Plattsburgh Women's Rugby Sports Club

About the Women's Rugby Sports Club and the Club's Operating Guidelines Funded by Student Association, the Women's Rugby Club at SUNY Plattsburgh club is a member of the Empire Rugby Football Union Geographical Union (Empire GU) and play in the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) upstate conference of the Empire GU. During the fall, they participate in Conference league games. The spring schedule consists of either scrimmages or tournaments.   In the fall of 2010, the team saw their first NYS Rugby Conference (NYSRC) playoff game but lost to Niagara in the first round.  They followed that up in the Fall 2011 with an undefeated regular season that led to their first NYSRC final appearance where they placed 2nd.  They now look forward to their fall Empire GU conference  Fall 2012 was the second year the women went undefeated in their side (east) of the conference which includes teams from Clarkson, SUNY Oswego, SUNY Potsdam, and Union and this is the first year they hosted finals against University of Rochester.  They defeated University of Rochester 25-5 to win the conference title - Empire Rugby Geographical Union, National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) Upstate Women's Champion. In regionals at Mt. Holyoke, they lost to Wheaton College, New England Wide CRC championNew England Wide CRC champion.   The men's and women's rugby teams sponsor the TNT Rugby Tournament. The profit from this tournament is donated to the Tony Santandrea Memorial Scholarship fund through the College Foundation. The women's club were crowned tournament champions in May 2009! At the Rugby field, remembrance plaques and trees have been planted to remember Tony Santandrea and Trevor Green rugby players who died as students and Billy Erwin, a rugby alumnus who died in the World Trade Centers on 9/11.

     Rules and Guidelines

Membership

Must be a full-time SUNY Plattsburgh student and each member must have a signed SUNY Plattsburgh Sports Club Personal Information Form & SUNY Plattsburgh Participation Agreement/Liability Waiver Form on file to participate each year. (If under 18 years of age, liabilty form must be signed by parent.) Each member is responsible to carry personal health insurance. Each member must be an individual member of USA Rugby. Each club member will be responsible for the cost of the membership in USA Rugby. All members are expected to follow regulations stated in SUNY Plattsburgh Sports Club Program Manual.  PLEASE NOTE: All players must complete participant information and waiver forms which may be downloaded here.  These forms cannot be submitted online but must be completed, printed out, signed, and then submitted to team leaders before one can participate in the program.

Season and Practices

The club will be scheduled from September to November each fall and March-May in the spring. No meets will be scheduled during college breaks or finals week. Participation in a game requires each member to attend all practices the week prior to the game. Any missed practices eliminate participation in the game for that week except for class conflicts.

Uniforms

Each member will be responsible for purchasing their own jersey as designated by the club.

Safety

Four club members will be required to serve as safety officers for club. They will be responsible for the general safety of all club members during practices and rugby matches and have valid CPR/First Aid certifications. At least one safety officer must attend all practices and competitions. Safety officers are responsible for attending to injured participant consistent with CPR/FA standards until trained medical personnel have arrived.

Travel

Travel arrangements are usually by private cars. The college is not responsible for any damages or injuries related to travel. It is strongly recommended that drivers of personal cars obtain additional insurance. Club members wishing to transport other club members must receive approval prior to traveling. To become an authorized driver, a copy of their driver’s license and the SUNY Plattsburgh Private Vehicle Use form must be submitted to the RSC.  

Tournaments: Competition must be within 300 mile radius of Plattsburgh.

Finances

Student Association monies may be used for coaches salary, Empire GU conference dues, referee society officials, entry fees, mileage (up to maximum of 300 miles one way) @ .25 per mile and lodging. Individual members will be responsible for USA Rugby individual membership and jerseys if needed.

Rugby Coaches and Student Leadership Responsibilities

Rugby coaches are required to be CPR/FA and to be USA rugby coaching certified. The coach and leaders will meet with the Recreational Sports Director (RSD) for orientation at the start of each semester. A Sports Club Manual, Club & Organization Resource Manual and a copy of the club’s operating guidelines will be reviewed at the orientation. All required forms must be submitted for a member to participate or drive for the club. SA Club/Organization Semester Registration and Directory forms must be submitted to the RSD each semester.

Sports Club Leader and Coaching Staff Expectations

Student leaders and coaching staff associated with the rugby sports clubs will coordinate with the Recreational Sports Director (RSD) as described below.

Coaching Staff and Field Captains will:

1. Not allow a student to participate in a practice or game unless appropriate forms have been submitted.
2. Allow only those on approved roster from RSD to participate in games.
3. Take attendance at every practice from approved player roster.
4. Update approved player roster from RSD. (Deleting names of those no longer participating and are not showing up to practices).
5. Assure that only those players who have attended practices during the week may play in game or travel with the team.
6. Set up player coaching staff and work with these students on practices when coach is not available.
7. Will not allow an injured player to return to practice or a game without a release from qualified medical personnel.

Team President and Vice President will:

1. Ensure that all players are SUNY Plattsburgh students (by checking on student locator) and carrying 12 credits.
2. Ensure that all players are CIPP’D and all required forms have been submitted to RSD.
3. Ensure that the club and its members are aware of and follow all rules and regulations set forth by the College and Student Association regarding Clubs.
4. Attend or designate attendees at any mandatory meetings set forth by the College, the Student Association, or NYS Rugby.
5. Submit Club/Organization Semester Registration and Directory forms to RSD each semester.

Treasurer will:

1. Submit all monies collected to the Recreational Sports Director.
2. Submit all requests for monies two weeks prior to event.
3. For all away games, submit the following Monday names and addresses of up to five drivers for travel reimbursement. (Can do by email).
4. Assign responsibility for managing club equipment and will be responsible for accounting for and securing such equipment at the beginning and end of each season

Match Secretary will:

1. Work with NYS Rugby on any scheduling/re-scheduling.
2. Schedule EMT’s for home games by the Sunday prior to home game.
3. Confirming referees for home games.
4. Report scores for all home games by Sunday following games.
5. File an accident injury report for any injury that occurs during participation.
