About the Men's Rugby Club and the club's operating guidelinesThe club is a member of the newly formed GU Empire Rugby Conference. During the fall, they participate in the Empire Rugby Conference league games. The spring schedule will consist of either scrimmages or tournaments. Funded by the Student Association.

In their 2001 season, the men's rugby team was undefeated in league play and won the NYS Rugby Conference Championship that qualified them for the NE Regional in Mass. (Fourth place). In 2002, the team placed second in the NYS Rugby Conference Championships and Brandon Lobrutto was named to the NE All Star team. Again in 2005, the rugby team was undefeated in league play, won the NYS Rugby Conference Championship and qualified for the NE Regional in Mass. (fourth place).
In the Fall of 2006, Plattsburgh State Men's Rugby club moved from Division III NYS Rugby Conference to Division II League playing Hamilton, Colgate, RPI, Union Oswego, and Siena. In the spring of 2009, the men's team took first at the NYS Rugby Collegiate Upstate Tournament beating Hamilton, Geneso and Buffalo State in the championship game 10-0.
The men's and women's rugby teams sponsor the TNT Rugby Tournament. The profit from this tournament is donated to the Tony Santandrea Memorial Scholarship fund through the College Foundation. At the Rugby field, remembrance plaques and trees have been planted to remember Tony Santandrea and Trevor Green, rugby players, who died as students and Billy Erwin, a rugby alumnus who died in the World Trade Centers on 9/11.
Must be a full-time SUNY Plattsburgh student and each member must have a signed SUNY Plattsburgh Sports Club Personal Information Form & SUNY Plattsburgh Participation Agreement/Liability Waiver Form on file to participate. (If under 18 years of age, liabilty form must be signed by parent.) Each member is responsible to carry personal health insurance. Each member must be an individual member of USA Rugby. Each club member will be responsible for the cost of the membership in USA Rugby. All members are expected to follow regulations stated in SUNY Plattsburgh Sports Club Program Manual. PLEASE NOTE: All players must complete participant information and waiver forms which may be downloaded here. These forms cannot be submitted online but must be completed, printed out, signed, and then submitted to team leaders before one can participate in the program.
The club will be scheduled from September to November in the fall and March-May in spring. No meets will be scheduled during college breaks or finals week. Participation in a game requires each member to attend all practices the week prior to the game. Any missed practices eliminate participation in the game for that week except for class conflicts.
Each member will be responsible for purchasing their own jersey as designated by the club.
Four club members will be required to serve as safety officers for club. They will be responsible for the general safety of all club members during practices and rugby matches and have valid CPR/First Aid certifications. At least one safety officer must attend all practices and competitions. Safety officers are responsible for attending to injured participant consistent with CPR/FA standards until trained medical personnel have arrived.
Travel arrangements are usually by private cars. The college is not responsible for any damages or injuries related to travel. It is strongly recommended that drivers of personal cars obtain additional insurance. Club members wishing to transport other club members must receive approval prior to traveling. To become an authorized driver, a copy of their driver’s license and the SUNY Plattsburgh Private Vehicle Use form must be submitted to the RSC.
Tournaments: Competition must be within 300 mile radius of Plattsburgh.
Student Association monies may be used for coaches salary, GU Empire Conference dues, officials, entry fees, mileage (up to maximum of 300 miles one way) @ .25 per mile and lodging. Individual members will be responsible for USA Rugby individual membership and jerseys if needed.
Rugby coaches are required to be certified in CPR/FA and have a USA rugby coach certification. The coach and leaders will meet with the Recreational Sports Directorr (RSD) for orientation at the start of each semester. A Sports Club Manual, Club & Organization Resource Manual and a copy of the club’s operating guidelines will be reviewed at the orientation. All required forms must be submitted for a member to participate or drive for the club. Club/Organization Semester Registration and Directory forms must be submitted to the RSD each semester.
Student leaders and coaching staff associated with the rugby sports clubs will coordinate with the Recreational Sports Director (RSD) as described below.
