Tax Prep Internship Prepares Accounting Students for Jobs

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (April 4, 2014) — When he began his studies at SUNY Plattsburgh as an accounting major, Hao Jiang ’11, like many people, thought taxes were dull — a “black and white” process, he called them.
But after completing his first tax class and hearing about an internship available to accounting students with Plattsbugh’s AARP Tax-Aide, his perspective started to change.
SUNY Plattsburgh Students Receive SUNY Chancellor's Awards

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (April 2, 2014) — SUNY Plattsburgh seniors Maura Danehey, Rebecca Robbins, Nikki Schiebel and Kym Taylor have been selected as recipients of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.
Presented by SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher today in Albany, the award was created 16 years ago to recognize those students who have best demonstrated the integration of academic excellence with leadership, athletics, career achievement, community service or creative and performing arts.
“Students honored with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence … truly embody the power of SUNY,” said Chancellor Zimpher.
Dance Corps' "Invasion" to Seize Campus

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (April 2, 2014) — Dance Corps will invade SUNY Plattsburgh this Friday and Saturday, when the group presents its annual spring show at 7:30 p.m. in Hawkins Hall’s E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium.
The production is titled “Invasion” because of its powerful and moving pieces, according to Dance Corps President Jessica Burton.
Dance Corps strives to include diverse forms of dance in its recitals, and this production is no exception. It will feature a variety of dances from traditional ballet and jazz to more exotic hip-hop and salsa.
SUNY Plattsburgh Music Student, Jason Levesque, to Give Senior Voice Recital

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (April 1, 2014) — The SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Music will present Jason Levesque, baritone, in his senior voice recital Sunday, April 13, at 4 p.m., in Krinovitz Recital Hall, Hawkins Hall.
Associate Professor of Music Dr. Karen Becker will accompany him in a program that opens with the Italian aria “Bella siccome un angelo” from the opera “Don Pasquale.”
Next will be a set of four German lieder: “Klage” by Carl Maria von Weber, “Wie Melodien zieht es mir” by Johannes Brahms, “Der Tod und das Mädchen” by Franz Schubert and “Zueignung” by Richard Strauss. The first half will conclude with the French song cycle “Le Bestiaire” by Francis Poulenc.
Free Enterprise Marathon Winners Announced

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (April 1, 2014) — SUNY Plattsburgh has announced the winners of the second annual Free Enterprise Marathon in the Angell College Center, which took place March 7.
In addition to SUNY Plattsburgh, the marathon involved student participants from Clarkson University, SUNY Canton, University of Vermont, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Adirondack, Norwich University, Clinton Community College, St. Michael’s College and Southern Vermont College.
India Elections Topic of Next SUNY Plattsburgh Asia Update Series

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (March 31, 2014) — The SUNY Plattsburgh Department of History is sponsoring an evening of talks on the upcoming elections in India Monday, April 14, from 5 to 6:15 p.m. in the Alumni Conference Room, Angell College Center.
“The World’s Most Populous Democracy: Elections in India 2014” will feature talks by professor and chair of the communication department, Dr. Shakuntala Rao, who will address “Media, Election, and the Practices of Democracy.” Dr. Susan Mody, associate professor in gender and women’s studies, will address “Identity Politics in India’s 2014 Elections.
Botswana Psychologist to Visit SUNY Plattsburgh Campus

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (March 27, 2014) — Mathews Okumbe, a senior psychologist at the Bamalete Lutheran Hospital in Ramotswa, Botswana, Africa, will be on campus for two weeks of lectures, talks and round-table discussions.
As the guest of SUNY Plattsburgh’s departments of psychology, social work and counselor education; the Honor’s Program; and the Institute for Ethics in Public Life, he will be on campus from March 30 through April 15.
SUNY Plattsburgh Student Wins Essay Contest

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (March 27, 2014) — A SUNY Plattsburgh English undergraduate won Gale-Cengage Learning’s Digital Essay Contest for her paper, “True Victorian Womanhood and Manhood.”
Winner Stephanie Boutin, of Middle Granville, N.Y., earned a $250 prize for her work.
SUNY Plattsburgh to Host American Chemistry Society Symposium

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (March 27, 2014) — SUNY Plattsburgh will host the 5th Annual American Chemistry Society Northern Section Spring Symposium Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Held in conjunction with the Plattsburgh Chapter Sigma Xi Symposium, the event invites science students and faculty to participate and present research data. Lunch will be provided, and prizes will be awarded for winning presentations.
SUNY Plattsburgh Students Honored at Theater Festival

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (March 17, 2014) — SUNY Plattsburgh theater students brought home honors from the Region I Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Hyannis, Mass., this January.
The group, accompanied by SUNY Plattsburgh Assistant Theater Professor Shawna Mefferd Carroll came home with two Certificates of Merit and a first place in the Tech Olympics.
