Teaching Candidate Brings History to Life Through Camp

Matt Hewson doesn’t just teach history, he lives it.

He was around six years old and on a family vacation in Gettysburg when he discovered the art of reenactment. Immediately hooked, he’s been traveling around the country ever since — spending weekends in clothes from the Civil War and other eras, eating their food and learning what he could about what life was like way back when. Got an App for That?

Researching Flying Squirrels with an iPhone

Here’s a new use for an iPhone: researching the nesting patterns of squirrels.

That’s what two SUNY Plattsburgh students did this spring. The two — Vaclav "Alex" Sotola ’12 and Jason Leewe — wanted to see if man-made nesting boxes would help squirrels rebuild their population in an area that had been disturbed, say, by logging. So they installed boxes in the wilderness that is part of the W.H. Miner Agricultural Institute. Read more.

Tory and Norman Taber: Creative Collaborators at Home in Upstate N.Y.

A pair of children, round-faced and seemingly brittle as porcelain. A horned monster with chameleon’s eyes and broken teeth, raging beside a girl who remains unfazed. An enormous lazy cat.

These are just a few of the children’s book illustrations created jointly by Norman Taber, associate professor of art at SUNY Plattsburgh, and his wife Tory, an adjunct instructor in the same department. Read more.
