Information For

Presidential Scholarships at SUNY Plattsburgh

Overview

SUNY Plattsburgh has a long standing tradition of rewarding students who have demonstrated an exceptional level of academic achievement in high school.  In fact, we annually award over $4 million in scholarships to our enrolled students.

Our most prestigious award, the Presidential Scholarship, is currently valued at $24,680 ($6,170 per year for 2014-2015 recipients) and will cover the cost of in-state tuition for all four years of undergraduate study at SUNY Plattsburgh. In the event that the tuition for New York State residents increases during the time that you hold this scholarship, the value of this scholarship will automatically cover any tuition increase.

Less than one percent of all SUNY Plattsburgh applicants will be nominated for this award and only five incoming students receive the Presidential Scholarship annually.  Learn more about our 2013-2014 Presidential Scholars by reading their personal profiles.

Eligibility

Students who have achieved a minimum 93 cumulative GPA in high school and 1250 SAT and/or 28 ACT may be eligible for consideration. Students who apply to Plattsburgh are automatically reviewed for Presidential Scholarship nomination. There is no additional application process or information needed to be nominated for the scholarship. Nominations will only be given to freshmen applying for the fall 2014 term.

Those who are nominated for the scholarship will automatically be invited into SUNY Plattsburgh’s Honors Program, one of the oldest and the largest within the SUNY system. Nominees will also be invited to Scholars Weekend - a weekend-long, invitation only event occurring on March 2 and 3, 2014. This event is designed to give accepted, high-ability students a personal glimpse into the life of a SUNY Plattsburgh student. Invitations for the event will be mailed out at the beginning of February.

Review Process

Students meeting our eligibility requirements for the Presidential Scholarship will receive a letter approximately two weeks after receiving their initial scholarship letter notifying them of their nomination. In order to be considered further, students must complete essay and questionnaire forms for the Presidential Scholarship Review Committee’s evaluation. These documents must be completed and submitted electronically no later than Monday, February 17, 2014 for full consideration.  Directions on how to access and submit these forms are outlined on the Presidential Scholarship nomination letter.

The submitted materials, along with the student’s academic achievements and application materials are then evaluated by the Presidential Scholarship Review Committee.  The Committee is comprised of Honors Program professors, past Presidential recipients and Honors Council members. Approximately ten students are invited to campus for a personal interview, where they will meet with current Honors Program professors and current Presidential Scholars. After all candidates have interviewed, approximately five incoming freshmen will be chosen to receive the award.

Presidential Award

The Presidential Scholarship is currently valued at $24,680 ($6,170 per year for 2014-2015 recipients) and will cover the cost of full-time, in-state tuition for four years of undergraduate study. In the event that the tuition for New York State residents increases during the time that you hold this scholarship, the value of this scholarship will automatically cover any tuition increase.

Presidential Scholarship recipients will continue to receive the Room Excellence Scholarship originally awarded to them at the time of acceptance. However, the Academic Excellence Scholarship originally awarded will be substituted with the Presidential Scholarship award. Therefore, the total merit-based awards received by a SUNY Plattsburgh Presidential Scholar enrolling for the 2014–2015 academic year is currently valued between $28,680 - $36, 680.

In order to remain eligible for the scholarship, students must be attending the institution full time and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher as outlined by the Presidential Scholarship Review Committee.

Presidential Scholarship Recipients

Our incoming Presidential Scholars for the 2013-2014 academic year achieved an average cumulative unweighted GPA of 96.8 and an average SAT composite score (critical reading and math only) of 1370 during their high school careers.
